Hello Everyone,

I am currently gearing up for a three month trip, and I want to purchase an external hard drive. I am looking for at least a 1tb drive that is portable and durable. I will be living out of my backpack so I need something that can withstand a bit of throwing around. Any brands or advice about what I should purchase is appreciated.

Thanks!

If the price is right, I would also consider a 500gb drive

I got the iomega eGo 1TB, similar to this, last year. Already managed to drop it once, and a thorough scan of the disk didn't find anything wrong with it (in contrast to my previous portable drive). It does come initially with the annoying feature of pretending to come with a CD-ROM drive, something that I immediately removed with the included software.

Edited to add: SSD drives would probably take beatings even better, but are still quite expensive, and don't come in sizes anywhere close to traditional ones.

Edited once more to add: Apparently, the SSD capacities are growing fast: http://www.gizmag.com/1tb-ssd-swiss-army-knife/21136/

I use a 64GB SSD drive (via USB) and its rock solid.

Got myself a SSD drive as well and yes, love it, fast and seems solid. Up to 128 gb somewhat ok in price, larger ones are still very expensive.

If you really need the storage I'm with Johans, got two iomega drives, one 500 gb and one 1 Tb, both have done a good solid job so far. Recommend.

If you need a durable and rugged external hard drive, you can't go wrong with a Lacie external hard drive

The Omega looks like a decent option and so does the Lacie.. However, there seem to be a lot of negative reviews with the Lacie drive

The WD (Western Digital) is also a good option.

Take your choice from these:

I bought the Seagate 1TB. It's a well know, very reliable make and hasn't given me any problems. These are also some of the best prices that I have found.

Hard drives are surprisingly durable when turned off, as in able to drop two stories with no loss of data. The case is a different matter, especially a lightweight one. Make a set of nesting bubble pack sleeves. Hard drives are a commodity. The differences these days are slight among the major brands.
