I just bought a Sandisk CF Extreme firewire reader. It is supplied with two firewire leads - 1394a and 1394b. Unfortunately, neither fits the socket on my laptop which is mini-firewire?? (small square socket). Looks like it will fit the firewire socket on my desktop as this has a large firewire port that is like a square USB port but with one end rounded.

Is there any way I can get round the problem on the laptop? Thanks.

Find one of these.

Actually, the above might not be correct, might need to change the male to female to male. Anyway, look at This page for options, and make sure that you get the female input to male which will fit in your firewire port.

Thanks very much for your help smokemon. I phoned Sandisk today and basically they said it won't work even if I got the correct lead - not enough power from the laptop to drive the device properly. They said it would work, but wouldn't be any better than USB. Makes you wonder why they bother with mini-firewire ports eh? This advice was also confirmed by my local computer / cable shop.

Looks like I will have to get a separate USB reader for the laptop.
