Think great big flash card that can be plugged into your PHD case. No altitude problems. No crashed disk problems.
I'd expect someone to release a USB 2.0 connectible device so that you didn't need to take your card out of the camera.

no point in a usb connectable though with current cameras at least - usb otg only supports 1.1 transfer rates, so you'll cripple it if you do it that way...
