I'm a technopeasant, so if you respond, please treat me like I am 4 years old. We got our Nano and the salesman answered my capacity query by saying," The promo says that the default bit rate (128) is close to CD quality but that's not true---go with say, 240 bit and you'll be able to get about 220 CDs on there." BTW, turns out that '8' nanos are actually 7.43. **So here is my question: why have we only been able to fit 80-odd CD albums on it and its very nearly filled to capacity, using that 240 bit rate?

I am done. The end.

Because salespeople these days often have trouble counting correct change, never mind calculating file sizes at various bitrates. 220 CDs stuffed into 8GB would have to be encoded at a bitrate less than 128kbps. There are freeware tools floating around online for calculating this stuff, but as I mostly use variable bitrate or 320kbps, I just have to deal with the resulting file sizes. 1 MB = .00098 GB (approx) so you can add up your files/folders, multiply, and figure out that the CDs your salesperson listens to must have about 2-3 songs each.

While 128 is still used to sell players (holds 100000000000 songs!!! Almost a lifetime of music!!!!), 192kbps has sort of become the default reference bitrate as it's the most common size for distributing music online. If you encode at 192, you'd get nice sounding files and you'd fit more than 100 CDs onto your Nano.

Burn a few songs at various bitrates. I pretty much use the 128 kbps bitrate & am satisfied with the resulting files. These are the same bitrates as the songs that itunes & lots of other stores use. They are good for most uses. If you are plugging into a high end stereo or use high end speakers, or are just a real audiophile, you won't be happy with your music unless it's at 192 or 256 kbps. Like I said, rip a few songs at various bitrates & see what works best for you.
