OK, I posted something here earlier today and then cancelled it because I thought I had solved the problem myself. Not so.
First question: How the hell do I delete a playlist? I have clicked "select all" and then "delete" buy the playlist stays there stubbornly. I tried deleting the whole iTundes programme and downloading it again hoping the the offending playlist would go away but it doesn't. Until I can sort that problem out I can't use iTunes on my desk top computer.
I started to try the same thing on my laptop, transferred a CD to a playlist in what I believe was MP3 but having loaded on to the playlist it then starts to (presumably) convert to MP3 and it takes AGES to do so. At this rate it's going to take a week to make up a CD. How can I create a playlist that will be MP3 right from the start?
Sorry, this is from a very non geeky person and I need to be guided step by step.
Thanks in advance

If you are looking to delete the actual playlist (not the songs themselves, but the actual playlist from the column on the left) just click on the little musical note next to the name of the playlist you want to delete & hit the delete key.

As far as the second question goes, I'm not quite sure that I understand what you're actual problem is.
In itunes, click on itunes->preferences from the menu bar. In the box that opens, select Advanced & then importing. Then under "Import using" choose mp3 encoder.
Now pop your CD into your computer & go to itunes, it should show the name of the CD somewhere in the column on the left had side. Select the CD & then somewhere you should see a button for burning CD. (it has moved around a few times in various itunes updates). Click this button & it should start importing. Depending on the speed of your computer/CD writer, etc, it will import at different speeds, but most of them should only take a few minutes to burn a CD.
Hope this helps.
Thank you mkarl. I really don't know what happened yesterday. I have made up MP3 CDs previously with no problem but yesterday NOTHING seemed to work. This morning the playlist that I had tried so hard to delete had disappeared and so far I have no problems. I am making up a new playlist and all seesm to be coming out well and recorded from the beginning in MP3.
Many thanks for your help.
Every time I think that I have a problem licked it seems that I speak too soon.
Today I have spent a considerable amount of time with a friend who has just finished his IT studies, trying to make up an MP3 disc with iTunes on my desk top computer. He managed to sort out a stack of problems for me, things like being able to record in the correct order etc. but when it came to actually burning the disc we came across "ERROR 216". We are not the only ones it seems. Putting "Error 216 itunes" in to Google brings up a lot of people who have had the same problem and there doesn't seem to be a solution. In my playlist there are no odd symbols, apostrophies etc. I the end I gave up.
This afternoon I tried to do the same thing on my laptop. No problem at all in creating a playlist, all in MP3, but having got on to the third CD, the computer now seems to be playing each track in real time and there is nothing I seem to be able to do to stop it. This is the same problem I had yesterday and why I said that it will take me a week to make up an MP3 CD.
Has anyone any brilliant ideas?
Can not say that I've ever seen or had the problem you've described. Not really a tech type at all but have you tried
1. a virus scan on you computers and
2. downloading a fresh copy of itunes?
The only other thing I can think of is sometimes certain programs are incompatible with each other and cause some fairly buggy results. Not sure if iTunes has any of those type problems but it couldn't hurt checking.
That's me all out of ideas.
Thanks Leanra, I did both, virus scan and downloading the latest copy of iTunes all to no avail. Also, as I said, if you Gooogle "iTunes error 216" you will see that very many more people have had this same problem.
I have spent almost the whole weekend, partly wit the help of an IT savvy friend, overcoming the problem. For an almost computer illiterate I feel quite proud of myself and if anyone has had the same problems as I, I would be glad to pass on what I have learnt. Basically it comes down to creating the music files with iTunes and recording them with Nero. One of the problems I found difficult to obercome even though it eventually had a simple solution, was to get everything to record and playback in the correct order. My IT friend told me that everything will play back in alphabetical order and the way to overcome this is to precede ever file with either a number of a letter. I have used a combination of either letters or number from just plain "1" to "01", "001" etc. I have now managed to make up four MP3 CDs containing about 9 hours of music each for my up and coming long drive to London.
