I live in the US and will be in Serbia for 10 weeks. I will be staying in the major metropolitan area as well as in the middle of the country. I need to have telephone service, but more importantly I need internet. If the two can be combined fine, but I could get a cell phone in Serbia to be able to use for just two months.

So it's the internet that worries me!

I read an ad in one of the magazines in the US that Virgin has a wireless program that it costs $40 or so per month and you pay as you go. I am unable to find anything on it online. This might have been a satellite service, but I could be wrong.

I would prefer to be able to access the net via laptop, but I suppose tablet would do.

Do you currently have a cell phone? If it's one of the newer 'smart' phones (e.g. HTC, Samsung Galaxy, iPhone etc) it should be capable of making itself into a wifi hotspot. Then your laptop (assuming it has wifi) can connect (or sometimes known as 'tether') to the internet via the phone's wifi connection.

This would only work if your phone is tri or quad band (for use outside of US) and it's unlocked.

Assuming that your phone satisfies all of the above, when you get to Serbia, go and buy a local SIM card with a pay-as-you-go plan which will include calls, SMS and data, This would be one of the cheapest way to get internet for your phone as well as your laptop. If you stay with your current provider in the US and try to use data services overseas, you will get a BIG bill - I'm talking thousands of dollars.

Search this branch for more info about using data and SIMs overseas for more tips.

Good luck!
