Hi there,

Yup, my iPod hit the floor and now it only alternates between the Apple logo and a picture of a file with an exclamation point over it. There is sometimes a dark line across the top of the screen.

It's an older, white 40GB style. What can I do? I've connected it to power and tried the toggle hold switch/hold down the 2 center buttons to reset it but it just comes back the same way. I'd love to get it working again but I'm most interested in retrieving some important photos that are stored on it.

Any brilliant ideas???

Thanks in advance for your help!!!

It's only a guess but...

I believe that these units have a mini hard drive. When it hit the ground, the unit probably damaged the hdd. You will need to return it to Apple to see if they can fix it for you.

The recovery of the pictures may be possible but, it's going to depend on the exact nature of the fault - if it's the HDD, probably not. If it's just a circuit board, you may be lucky.

Cheers
Zoltan

Seconding the above. Though hmm shouldnt you still be able to get into the diagnostics menu when it's in that state? Though thats depending on the fault. But it could give you more info on the problem, do some googling.

Not sure how, but in your shoes I'd be trying to get a backup done. If it were anything else, I'd suggest opening it, and putting the HD into an adapter - but it's an iPod, and their harddisks apparently use a proprietary connector...

If you do send it back to Apple, make sure they're aware you need the data on it. Cover it with labels to that effect, and ideally have someone sign something when you hand it over - they tend to have a rather cavalier approach to user data in my experience.
