i'm an american traveling in australia. i bought a phone here (oz) and got it all set up and i can make calls, send texts, etc. but i can't receive texts from my friends in the states.

they use sprint. sprint says to use 011 country code phone number. so they've tried 011 61 04 315... but nothing is getting through. i feel as though i'm just missing something simple. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

I have a very strong suspicion, that you have to drop the leading 0 in the mobile number.

So, in your situation, your friends would need to dial 011 61 (Australia) 4315...... (your mobile - sans the first zero).

Let me know how you go with this solution.

You need to drop the "0" off the front of the actual number. 011 61 4315......

A different suggestion: Try replacing the prefix with a (motorola/sony/crackberry - press and hold the zero)

So they'd dial:

61 (a plus, then the IDD for Australia) then

4315... (your mobile number, including the usual code within Australia, without the first zero)

It's possible that the gateway doesn't work - we've had problems with SMS between North America and everywhere else in the past. I also had problems with Vodafone in Australia, with delayed messages and vanishing messages internationally.

As other have suggested, drop the zero

This also applies to the zero in the area code for landline numbers in Australia (when calling from outside Australia)

I'm with vodafone and I have to use the plus sign.

An easy way to avoid these problems is to text the person first, then they will get your number in the proper format (+614315...) and can just use "reply" or add you to their phone book.
