How do I split long MP3s into chapters for cd playback?

I have some mixtape mp3 files that have over an hours worth of music and need to be able to split them so i can listen to properly, skipping chapters so i can get to whichever track or part of the album without having to fast forward through it all. Can anyone tell me how to do this and recommend any freeware that is simple to use. Would be good if I could easily listen to the album and just press a button to select each new track.
