So I bought this lovely ASUS Eeepad so I can take it on my next trip and I want to have a few movies on it in case I get stuck in an airport, long bus ride etc. I'd like to pay for the movies but can't figure out how. I can't use iTunes on it and I can't download from Amazon because I am in the wrong country. Any suggestions?

I would have suggested Google Play for movies, but it's not available in NZ yet. I think your best bet is to rip your own movies and copy them to the Eeepad. Look up Handbrake.

Hi,

To have access to things like iTunes, Netflix, Pandora, Amazon, etc. overseas, you basically have pass your connection through a U.S. server. There are two ways to do this, 1) Connect through a proxy server in the U.S., or 2) Use a VPN connection back to the U.S.

There are some free proxy server sites you can try using. I'm not sure how well they work. I did use a proxy server while traveling in France last year so I could listen to Pandora and Grooveshark. But I ran my own server at home. The setup is very involved even for a techie.

An alternative is VPN, especially if you can mooch off your work VPN. Hopefully they route all traffic through the VPN tunnel so it basically appears like you are at work.

Hope that helps and happy travels,

-Vince

Thanks for the suggestions.

I'll look at handbrake for the movies I already have.

I don't like using proxy servers when my credit card details are going to be used. VPN would be a good idea but NZ is my home so that's no good to me.

I have found movieberry and it seems to have worked on the one movie I've tried so far.. Takes forever to download though.

If you're ever in South Auckland, my husband knows how to put movies onto a hard drive. He has shelf fulls of DVDs and videos he's put onto it.

He's bitching and moaning tonight about not being able to get into iTunes and IE. He's given up and gone to bed. I'll look at it tomorrow.
