There are so many on app store and I'd like to know which ones can be really helpful. Anyone has a suggestion?

I like Flight+ on the iPad.
Not absolutely necessary unless you are a frequent flyer but its a lot of fun to play with.
There is a free version available.

I'm used to 3 travel apps.
Kayak, easy to search for flights, hotels and car rentals.
Urbanspoon, find local eats and near-by restaurants
iStone Travel Translation App, a voiced multi-language translation app, helps me communicate when abroad.

The app that Ive used most when travelling is definitely Skype on my Ipod touch.

The tripadvisor app has been useful with finding reviews of places.

An app called menupages was brilliant for its reviews of restaurants and the best cheap places to get food. It has an inbuilt map that helps you identify all the best restaurants around you. The only drawback of this app is that it only has reviews for most of the popular cities in the USA and no where else in the world.

Im not sure if this counts as an app but with google talk on your laptop, you can make free calls to any number in the USA. So its a great tool to use incase you dont have a US compatible phone.

I've been playing with tripadvisor on my commute whilst planning my trip, its a great resource, have you/can you used the app at all to book a stay whilst on the road and is it any good?

Unfortunately I have never tried to use the Tripadvisor app to book accommodation, as Ive just used it for reviews of places. Im not sure if you can use it to book accommodation but Im sure if it did, then it would just redirect you to the hotel website or one of the booking sites.

I have always used booking sites like agoda.com and booking.com to book my accommodation, so with that said, I would rather use the dedicated booking.com app to book accommodation

A good mobile travel app to have is TripIt where you can record and organize all your travel details in one location - be it flight timings, travel plans or itinerary.

Another good to have app is Boingo Wi-Finder, which is pretty useful for finding free WiFi hotspots to go online to search for information / accommodations while travelling around. And on the occasion you're stranded with no accommodations, Hotel Tonight comes in handy to make last-minute booking, at times with good deals.

The Google Translate app could also prove useful if you venture outside the English-speaking countries. Though the translation not 100% accurate, still good to have in case you need to find a bathroom urgently.

Another one which I find good to have (just in case) is travel insurance apps (NTUC & Aviva) which lists your policy coverage and enables you to record down incidents (flight delays, lost of luggage) for claims or buy travel insurance on the go.

hello, would like to ask a technical question. anyone here know if it is generally safe to purchase on the mobile platform?
so far, i've purchased a couple of times and it's fine.
i heard of people stealing account information and hackers online on the web, not sure about mobile.

Actually it’s safer by using mobile. Mobile system and hardware are limited and some virus programs cannot run.

Only please don’t set that your account or password kept, don’t lend your phone to others or don’t get it lost. Clear records and information termly. Last thing, install a security app.

for those travelling to India, which has so many monuments that tourists look forward to visit, i'd recommend the app named Glory of India which has interesting snippets of history, maps of that period and a built in search where you can enter a city and find what history took place around there or search a dynasty/kingdom you are fascinated by

The dynasty search is cool because it gives a How-the-dynasty-started to the How-the-dynasty-ended with interesting facts in between. For some dynasties there are images of the monuments/palaces/forts or even images of rulers from portraits and sometimes coins

all in all a great app - find it on youtube for a quick demo

Full disclosure: I made this for travelers because I've been to a lot of countries where I tried to communicate ideas by miming, pointing, and making goofy hand motions.

It's a picture-based phrasebook that lets you string together images and show a question or concept to somebody on the screen. It's free to download; you have to pay for all the pictures. You can search the App Store for "YesIcon" or go to yesiconapp.com
