get a Minolta or Nikon mechanical film camera - those manual focus cameras. some of them work without a battery - just that the light meter does not work.

But again you can get battery pack rechargers that load up with AA batteries and have a USB plug which can you use to recharge cameras or phones and other devices if they run out of power when you are on the move.

hmmm I had a look today at different digital cameras and i seriously need to decide what i want to bring. I now have the dilemma of whether to go for digital underwater or just a digital. I guess the main attraction of underwater is the durability especially on the beach with the sand and eveything, although the pictures won't be nearly as good as a normal camera, and being using to a good quality nikon i think if their crappy quality it will really annoy me. I think the majority of shots i will be taking will be above land and for the few that i want to take, i can buy an underwater disposable camera or something and just use that. How would people recommend you back up your pictures - i guess if i upload them to facebook in an internet cafe then there somewhere at least!

The underwater cameras can take good pictures , not as good as DSLR , but still good. The disposable cameras take crappy quality , but the compact digital underwater cameras are ok . And ultimately how good the pictures will be will depend on how good the light conditions are.
Back up your pictures by not deleting them after you have transferred them to disc and leaving them on the card and using another card when the last one fills up. Having them burned onto CD and uploading to storage site is probably good enough.
