When you go to Africa Gareth please bring us back some nice frame-filling head shots of lions and Cape buffalo.
;o)

Have done similar, 17-35, 50 and 80-200. Works fine for about 90% of situations indeed.

When we go somewhere where we know a longer lens is needed we bring it. 'Travel' is a very general term. In my opinion African Safari is not the norm or average for 'travel'.
One wouldn't do well on a Scuba trip with this camera choice either...
;-)
And hey, you almost always can get closer instead of using the bigger lens. Makes for all the more excitement with all those lions around...
:-)

It's all horses for courses, it's not just true of cameras, but also of lenses.

I have about as much interest in going to the African continent, and taking snaps of lions and buffalos, as I would in attending a 'digital is best - period' lecture by Bob Trips.
However if you want to hire me to do just that Bob,no problem, I'll just add the hire of a couple of long fast telephoto L's to your invoice.

Praise Ja-zus!!! We've witnessed a miricul.
Gareth has finally realized people who travel differently from him sometimes need different gear than he carries.
(Or at least we can hope.... ;o)

Of course this line shows that he still is having a reading comprehension problem. :o(
Pray for our brother Gareth.

And Bob has just realised I don't particulary care for shooting wildlife.
Note also Bob, that I said I, as in I, not you, or this is what you should take. I means just that, it's what I take. It's what I like to use, and it generally works for me.
From another thread;

But is there something that one can get with film (aside from an old familiar look) that they can't get from digital? Or is it a lack of digital file handling skills?

It's all been explained to you Bob, but you don't want to listen. And of course you always know better.
Lots of people still use film, but according to Bob it's beacuse we all lack skill!

Geez, Gareth.
You copy what I say into your post and you still can't read it.
