I'm about to start a 3 month cycle tour in Europe and am wondering what types of camping gas cylinders are available in France, Spain and Portugal. Our Kovea stove requires a screw top fitting - does anyone know if these cylinders are readily available? We also have the old style camping gas stove that uses pierce-able gaz cylinders....... or are we better off using a metho/alcohol trangia type stove?

Take a look at Coleman's website to see what carts are on offer in France/Spain/Portugal etc - Coleman carts are screw thread fitting.
Campingaz have French origins (even though they're now owned by Coleman...) so the C206 pierceable carts should still be available.
I'd hedge my bets though and suggest that you research and think about investing in an MSR SuperFly stove.
If memory serves me right, this can be fitted to both screw thread carts (ie Coleman, Primus, MSR and others) plus the CV spigot fit carts that Campingaz also make (CV270, CV300 and CV470 carts)
Sadly it's one of the few gas stoves I haven't tried out (I've got the MSR Pocket Rocket plus Primus Titanium and other stoves which use screw thread carts and the Campingaz Twister kit - uses CV carts), but I've seen several good reviews of the SuperFly..
Don't recognise the name of Kovea as I've not seen it here in the UK, but one thing I do know, the SuperFly will be more compact than a Trangia and offer more flexibility and more rapid cooking times too.. (Yep, I have three different Trangias too - sad, but a result of having been an instructor for a few years and doing some scribbling too about gear...).
Hope that this helps

I've bought 'Gaz' cylinders all over Europe (East and West).
The best of luck with everything

I would take or a Superfly, or one for piercable.
The benefit of piercable is that even if no campingstore is near, you can always go to a DIY shop and get a gascan for a paintstripper or the like, which are (if the size is right) the same.
I'm from the Netherlands and i have also both burners. Camping in europe -> mostly i take the piercable one, camping in, eg , USA-> Superfly (Although i like the Superfly more, it's compact and lightweight). But it also depends where i'm going: France, Spain and Portugal are 'developed' holiday countries so getting screw-top or the other one would not be a problem i guess, on the other hand when i was in Montenegro (not really 'holiday developed' i was really happy that i had my piercable one with me.

Thanks Hopjesvla ... we are starting our holiday in the Netherlands so I'm wondering how readily available the screw top cans are there. Also, do you know if it is possible to buy an Edelrid Gas Adaptor in Amsterdam which would allow me to use piercable gas cans with my stove?
Thanks everyone for your helpful replies.
