Going to India for a month than south east Asia for a month and a half, then New Zealand for possibly a year holiday visa. If I was going straight to New Zealand straight away I might take my mac book air but now I am thinking I might get a Ipad or one of those tablets with the keyboard that attaches because it is a bit much to lug around (even though it is a light laptop)

I will be using it for general entertainment, Skype, downloading music, and also emails and maybe working on resume (for finding work in NZ) The work part and the fact that tablets don't usually have usb ports are my only real concerns.

Any recommendations?

Tablets do have USB ports, at least the Android ones.
You use an adapter cable for full USB plugs.
What do you plan to connect, as the use is limited even if you can plug in all USB devices.

Google just came out with a new version of their Nexus brand. Check out the Google Nexus 7" or 10", not too expensive and getting pretty good reviews.

There are bluetooth keyboard/cases you can buy, and as post #1 mentions, you can buy a mini USB to USB converter. Just search for USB OTG cable.

Enjoy your trip! I'll be traveling to SEA as well soon, from September - November.

For the tablets try them out whatever floats your boat.....

For casual stuff, I would say tablets are fine. For more typing I prefer a proper keyboard. For my every day at home usage I could use a tablet, I have a PC and a laptop so I cannot get a tablet, would feel guilty until the lappie breaks.

I currently have the Nexus 10, which is really good and comparable with the ipad, but a lot cheaper. However for travelling I would go to the 7" version the Nexus 7. This is a more portable tablet, and for the price a snip. Have a good look around as there are lots of good android tablets, the old adage you pays your money you takes your chance.

I think by the time you add a keyboard and case etc for the tablet the mac air (is it 11"??) will only be marginally heavier.

Of course a 7" tablet and keyboard will be lighter but there is a definite drop in usability. there will always be a compromise here. Personally i got annoyed taking a keyboard and tablet around with me, especially when the tablet is limited USB wise, storage space wise. although it was useful when i just wanted to read something. pro and cons for both.

+1 for the Nexus 7. I just posted regarding one for travel photography on here

I'm happy to drop to a 7 inch screen for the benefits it gives me. Firstly it's significantly cheaper than the 10" version, it's easier to carry (it'll fit in a decent sized pocket) and is lighter. I'm looking at a wired or bluetooth keyboard as opposed to one that's built into the case as I won't be using it all the time, but each to their own on that one.

With regards to the weight compared to a laptop, I don't think the laptop stands a chance. The 10" nexus is around 600g, with a lightweight bluetooth and a case it would still be way under the 1kg mark which if I'm not wrong is something like the weight of the macbook pro, and then you've got to add on the weight of it's case and powerbrick (or whatever apple call theirs).

Each to their own though.

Woldranger, again thats the tradeoff. sometimes a ultrabook/macair etc is maybe a little bit heavier but has a lot of extra functionality. Just like a dSLR vs a compact camera.

For me personally a 7" screen is just too small to do what i want on it. There are many who say 7" is too big and just take a phone with a 4" screen.

Usually though as soon as people start taking a keyboard with their tablet and other accessories, they end up getting close to a laptop with anyway. Of course you can't hold a laptop up to read either.

Seems the OP is rather plannig to do some 'light' stuff on his device. I think a 7inch tablet should do fine for his needs.

For myself I use cellphone more and more at home, along with a 7 inch tablet. I switch on the computer only when doing real work and mucho of it or when playing certain games.

The laptop is not used anymore at all, it pits just uncomfy between the rest.
Now the only new gadget I would buy is if I had a tablet device which has the power to do most of the work of my desktop.
Tablet with i5, 8gig of ram and windows 8 here I come...
Just too expensive for now.

New iPad and mini 2 will be released in the next few weeks.

Worth a look if you aren't leaving before.
