Thanks all. I expect a "cracked" screen literally is what has happened. It is still under warranty and I am taking it to the repair depot on Monday. I strongly suspect they will say I've dropped it or something and not allow the repair/replace screen under warranty but we'll find out. Fortunately the repair depot is not far away so I can take it there instead of paying for shipping only to find out they won't repair it. Some benefits to living in a big town.
It's always a bit of a puzzle, what to buy. I bought this little Acer netbook for travel and it has been super for that. Kind of funny how these things can bounce around in a backpack for months without breaking then come home and break sitting on a table. Oh well.
But the conundrum for me if I have to replace it is that I am about to head off on 3 mos travel again and I don't want to pay more than a few hundred $ because of the theft factor. On the other hand, these little netbooks are limited in what they can do/speed/smoothness. I MISS my old Toshiba Protege. But that one cost me $2000 10 years ago! I still have it - works fine after all those years of travel - but none of the USB ports work and it is a heavy thing in comparison tot netbooks.
