Hey, I posted the below on the NE Asia forum but realised this would probably be a better fit, specifically with regards to whether it's feasible for my budget, thanks!

So I've committed myself to saving hard over the next year before going out travelling next January. I'm looking to save £12k but could possibly push myself at work and make some cuts to get it to £15k if necessary. I've made up a dream travel path and researched ways and prices of getting to each destination but the only things…

I plan on going traveling in April and I want to for at least a year.

The thing is I seem to be too short for what I plan to do.

I was thinking of traveling Asia from April through to Sept and then moving to NZ and enjoying the summer months until feb time before getting a WHV. Only thing is I dont think I have enough.

I have been told May though to August is the worst time to travel asia. I dont really want to wait until next October and travel asia for three months and then move to NZ in…

Hi All,

Apologise if there is another thread on this topic, I searched but couldn't find anything I needed.

In the process of planning a trip through the US and South America, for the 2014 WC, and just brought the South America shoestring guide.

It seems the USA shoestring guide is no long being published and I am trying to work out if the new USA guide has good shoestring advice or should I try and get the old US Shoestring guide book second hand.

Appreciate your help in advance.

I am retired and plan to visit Panama in January and need to find an affordable rental for 3 months to check out the possibility of relocating there. I have a limited budget, and am landing in Panama City, and would also like to check out Boquete and possibly Bocas del Toro.
Already I am having trouble finding apartment rentals around the $400-$450 range, but keep hearing that they are out there. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to what else I might try other than listings on the…

What to pack is a topic that comes up regularly here on the Thorn Tree. Packing too much is one of the two commonest mistakes that travellers make, along with trying to see too much in too little time.

Over time, my wife and I have refined our packing list to reach a balance between comfort/safety and weight.

So here is my packing list:

Pack: Vaude Triset 25+4. I’ve had this pack for a few years now and the fit for me is excellent. I like the Aeroflex back and find that with a wicking t-shirt…

So, I posted in the mainland Southeast Asia forum about taking my first backpacking trip in a few months. I'm looking to travel for maybe 2-3 months on around 5-6k(USD). The initial plan was to go to SEA, see Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, most likely. Airfare for this trip would cost me at least $1300.

Well, looking on skyscanner.com I found that around the same time frame I can get a roundtrip ticket to one of several cities in Colombia for under $300! I live in the Washington, DC area…

I spoke to a woman recently who's inspired me greatly. Specifically with her travels around the world, and currently with China in her sights after living in America for a few years. Compared to anyone I've ever met aside from my father who has traveled only for business reasons, she has been more places than everyone I've known combined. She speaks multiple languages from what I learned being English, Spanish, French, Romanian, and was learning Chinese also; so immediately in comparison to me I…

Hello Fellow Backpackers,

I have been traveling with you intermittently for the past 15 years. I've had awesome conversations with you over dinner talking about whatever I saw that day in my long trips though Europe, Ecuador, Uganda, Thailand, the US, and now Morocco. I love your worldly knowledge. I love your respect for culture and your adventurous spirit. I've loved swapping travel stories with you. Receiving your warnings and recommendations and giving you warnings and recommendations. You…
