Well, when I was 18 I bought an Interrail ticket and travelled across Europe by train as far as Istanbul. I assume people still do that. You could do worse.
The following year I spent my summer working on a kibbutz in Israel, then went to Egypt with my best friend. That gave us some stories to tell.
