I am hoping to take a 6 month career break throughout Europe and would like to incorporate as many voluntary projects as possible. Does anybody have any recommendations of projects (large or small) with an environmental focus? I do not mind rolling my sleeves up and hard graft but don't want to have to pay the earth for it.

My ideal scenario would be to live with a local host family/community and contributing to them in exchange for food and accommodation. I know this could be asking a lot but any suggestions would be welcome. I will have access to my own vehicle, am a fan of Southern and Eastern europe and I speak good French and some Spanish.

You could look at . There are lots of interesting opportunities in southern Europe, not so many in Eastern. When I lived in Ireland there were lots of wwoofers travelling around from USA and mainland Europe, seemingly having a great time. We recently joined up with the Wwoofers Independents, which lists all WWOOF hosts in countries that do not have a national WWOOF organisation. http://www.wwoof.org/newsite08/ . It costs about 30 euro for a year's membership including lists of all the jobs in each country and contact numbers. You work for board and lodgings, not only organic farm work but eco-building, helping with children. Some places expect you to work ridiculous hours ( one 48 hr week in Chile, working in the fields !) but you should aim for between 20 and 30 hrs max. You can always do more if you feel like it.
