Hi all

I'm looking for airfares to fly to Malaysia at the end of June. We are a family of five. Malaysian airlines is my preference but the current price from Belfast to Kuala Lumpur is astronomical at over £1000.

However, I can fly from Dublin via Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur with Malaysian Airlines at £554. Quite a saving.

I'm guessing that it is due to avoiding UK airport and fare taxes.

I prefer to fly out of Belfast as it's easier for us as a family to get to, but if the fares don't improve then we will fly from Dublin.

Just wondering if anyone based on their experience knows anything about UK taxes and airport duty. If they are fixed, then even if the Malaysian airlines fare comes down, the overall fare including taxes, duty may be still higher than the fare flying from Dublin.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

That fare from Belfast sounds very high (per person return flight, yes?)

I'd say the problem is leaving from there rather than UK airport/fare taxes...you should be able to get a flight from London for the same price as the one from Dublin for example.

£550 for end of June sounds about normal price to me....

BTW if you don't mind an indirect flight (eg stopover for a couple of hours in Doha) the cheapest option is often Qatar airlines.....

At that time of the year this is standard fare price, have just checked it on fly scanner. May be better getting a flight from Belfast to say Heathrow and then go for a cheaper option of 1 stop over mosy probly via Dubai or India.... It's real expenisive I know but they know its vacation time for most europeans who have a mostly mild summer climate....

The main reason is simply that ticket prices are higher from Belfast, not because of taxes and other fees (although those contribute slightly). See details below. The fare difference in the ticket itself makes up £439 of the total difference.

Not sure which dates you're flying, but you can at the moment fly Dublin-KL for £430 with Turkish Airlines. I consider that a great price. Since you're flying in summer time, high season, prices are unlikely to improve. I would buy ASAP. Dublin Airport is just 1h 40min from Belfast... I know people who have a longer commute to work than that :)

(Those prices are for travel end of June, I should add.)

max.mex is that return with turkish airlines ...if so seems a bargain and should be snapped up

flying from b/fast to heathrow is also option and then head from there but prices are rising steadily

Yes, it was return including all taxes and fees (according to Itasoftware), flying out end of June, back 2 weeks later. Seems like a great price to me too, especially for summer travel. It is not impossible you can get even lower if you go through a UK/Irish based broker.

The cheapest I saw from London was £599, but maybe you can do better!
