I have for sure.......last summer.I think the vast majority of people who go to the Kinabatangan River will see at least 1 wild orang utan.

i don't think the Balkans is a bad destination..but if the OP wants to see animals I wouldn't choose that area (or anywhere in Europe).

Wow, I didn`t know you can see wild orangutans at the Kinabatangan!

I thought you can see mostly just proboscis monkeys.

I think I`ll add Kinabatangan to my must do list! :)

but if the OP wants to see animals I wouldn't choose that area (or anywhere in Europe).

I think you`re right!

So what do you think about Indonesia OP? :)

Thanks everyone I live in the US South Carolina so I kwow that flights are going to be expensive and I'm thinking about South East Asia or Eastern Europe like Croatia or Albania. Also are there any inexpensive place in Africa that are safe? Im looking for nature and wildlife but I don't want crazy busy tourist destinations. Also I had the idea of going right after New Year since I'm graduating a semester early and spending like a month or two traveling to a number of different place around that area but what do y'all think of that? Thanks!

Ghana is cheap, safe, friendly, but there isn`t much wildlife compared to East Africa.

If you can travel in January-February Southeast Asia, New Zealand, India or Central America are all great options.

New Zealand is not cheap, but from 5000 USD you can travel pretty much anywhere.

Central America is generally cheap, cheapest airfares from USA, great wildlife, but not safe and quite busy.

New Zealand, expensive, most expensive airfare from USA, beautiful nature(but not so many animals), safest, easiest place to travel(English spoken, well developed infrastructure, hostels), it`s very busy in Jan-Feb.

India, cheapest, reasonably safe, easy to travel(English spoken, good infrastructure), beautiful nature and wildlife, also busy. It can be quite a culture shock for a first time traveller: dirty, crowded, polluted, lots of hassle.

Southeast Asia, cheap, safe, nature + wildlife OK, easy to travel, but VERY busy. It`s a very good place to start for a first time traveller.

I don't want crazy busy tourist destinations

In most countries there are a few crazy busy destinations, more destinations simply busy and plenty of great places off the beaten track where are very few tourists.

If you are considering SE Asia....well,Indonesia is part of SE Asia!

True, but in many ways it`s quite different from the rest of SEA.

The best time to visit most parts of Indonesia is in summer and not in winter, like the rest of SEA.

Countries like Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos are a crazy tourist circus these days(since at least 10 years), while Indonesia sees very few tourists outside Java, Bali and Lombok.

The wildlife in Indonesia has more variety than anywhere else in SEA, because the Wallace Line divides Indonesia, so you basically get 2 in 1.

just graduated college but i did the exact same thing my high school senior spring, had a senior project to do, never travelled alone before, so i went to work on a farm called Finca la Flor for three weeks in the mountains of Costa Rica...flights should be reasonable, and it's real safe. i didn't speak a word of spansih when i went but people helped me out anyway.

enjoy!
