I've looked at terms and conditions of contract for a flight but they are not always easy to read. Basically I came across a cheap flight and I believe the tax has been worked out wrong. I think it's only been charged one way, if that.

Although a contract is sealed once payment and goods are exchanged, there are still terms and conditions to abide by and it appears that airlines can charge extra for any changes in their fees at any given point before your flight, regardless of if you have your ticket. And you cannot cancel the flight due to this unless you have a booking that allows it.

I spoke to STA travel and they confirmed. But then again there is the sale of goods act which works in our favour with these things but which presumably is overwritten by any terms of a contract with the airline.

So, if i've been undercharged by tax by quite a lot, do I have any leg to stand on? Anyone know of any cases where this hs happened?

Cheers

p.s i'm going to seek advice tomorrow but interested inexperiences more than anything. Maybe airlines don't usually notice if this happened!

You haven't actually received the 'goods' until you take the flight - you are paying for the transport service, not the piece of paper or the electronic ticket, so I guess they can still come at you for the extra tax. But flight taxes and how they are worked out are a complete mystery to me so I would never realise I had been over- or under-charged anyway. I'd just cross my fingers and hope nobody notices.

Ok an update. I looked at the charges more closely. They, when pricing up an open jaw ticket (spain-peru-uk), completely miss out the fuel surcharge. When booking closed jaw spain-peru-spain it's £360 extra fuelcharge. I've not acually booked but some people on a forum are and tbh I would too if I thought I could get away with it ;D

But the point is, it's not the government taxes that the airline collect from passengers, its something that they charge themselves. Therefore there is no law to say it has to be paid? The actual T&C's state

"Ticket fares may include taxes and fees levied on air transportation by government authorities. Such taxes and fees may either be included in the Fare or appear separately under “fees”. Any tax or fee not paid may be charged."

BUT they are referring to the government taxes and fees right? Not their own charges?

Hmmmm

"I would never realise I had been over- or under-charged anyway"

I outright asked the airline if it was a mistake and if not, how it was so cheap. They said it was just how the open jaw ticket was priced and i'd not get charged any more. It's basically that price. :/ I wrote down the time of the call and asked the persons name who told me. Had a think then went to the travel agent I quite like to book with. They double checked it too. So I booked it. Going to Peru for at least half price :/ I wait for the etickets before getting excited!

This happens all the time, and usually people seem to get away with it unless the airline would make a huge loss (like selling thousands of business class tickets for a few dollars each). If you read the fine print, the airlines pretty much have the rights to do whatever they want with your flight, but in practice they don't. But are you telling us that you can fly Spain-Peru-UK for £220 all in? And you called the airline and they verified that this is the correct price? That sounds like an unusually good deal. We've seen cheap flights like that between the US and Peru before, but not from Europe! If you are still concerned, you might want to wait a bit with making further arrangements such as booking connecting flights or accommodation, but if you called the airline and they verified, it sounds like you're good.

Yeah still worried there will be loopholes somewhere but as you say they are not overly likely to do anything and the airline verified and the booking agent I used.

By the time I had all the lengthy discussions with the travel agent (with him repeatedly saying "phenonemal" and probably booking it himself as we spoke) it went to £234. Then decided to add on an internal flight so total, international and domestic flights inc taxes £258!

I've got to add on Madrid flights but that is £30 atm by the look of it (will book that one soon!) and it actually means I can go from local airport rather than the hassle of getting to London which probably cost that much getting there anyway. So it's all worked out really well and i've not been to mainland Spain before so will have a couple of days there.

I looked again after and the flights went up a bit but it was just the base fare increase, not the extras. But there are some more appeared today... http://book.statravel.co.uk/staglobe/AirFlightSearchResult.do?followAction=AirFlightSearch :) Again a bit more if you want internals added.

p.s I got the etickets and again checked with travel agent if this means it's a done deal and he said yet, get on and book the Easyjet flight!
