Hi. I am a (young) 32 year old female taking my 17 year old niece away for a month during the summer. I dont have a clue where to start when it comes travelling Europe and would be grateful for any suggestions. We definately want some beach time a fair bit probably but I also want to give her a taste of travelling. I need advice on how many/what countries would be a good choice and how to make sense of interrailing as I think this would probably be the cheapest option. Thanks.

Portugal, Spain and Greece are the cheapest western Europe countries to visit.
Portugal is a place you have to go on purpose, since its not on the way to any other country. And iots wonderful!

August is a tough month to see southern Europe, since most of Eeurope takes their vacations then. And most go south.

Train is the best way to travel. Because of whaT WE LEARN FROM OTHER PASENGERS DURING OUR MANY CONVERSATIONS.

You don´t say where you´re from. If this is Your first time to Europe, "Europe Through the Back Door" by Rick Steves will give more help than we can, because it covers so many aspects of it.
Get his money belt that holds plaNE TICKET, PÀSSPORT, AND ONLY OTHER STUFF MENTIONED in the funny instructions.

There´s a big underground market for passports. The bad guys don´t care about the new technology on yank passports. They won´t tell the chump they sell it to about that.

Cops can´t do anything about tourist crime, because tourists can´t stay for a year after the bad guy is caught, which he won´t be. These are pros your dealing with. He hands the goods off to a henchmaN SO nothing can be retrieved or proven.

You could easily spend the month in one of the larger countries - especially if you want to spend time at the beach: Spain, France, Italy, Germany. - and you would still only have seen mayde 10 or 20% of the country.
Do not waste your precious time rushing around. Select 3-6 "areas" (incl. the beach) and explore by daytours - or if a small number: stay 2 places/area.
An "area" could be some thing of the size of 1/3 of Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Toscana, Tyrol, or say the city + the area around one of the larger towns/cities (Rome, Paris etc.).
All this said - what are your interests? Does you want a 100% guarantee for HOT weather for the beach or do you want great beaches (like i NFrance, Denmark etc.)? Does EEurope, Scandinavia, Benelux, Switerland, Austria...appeal to you or are you an Greece-Italy-France-Spain-type of tourist? Are you for countryside, small towns, capitals??

Best answer so far. #6

Like you can see, people have a lot of options for you. So you will have to be more specific.
Is the price important? Huge, huge difference between London and the Slovakian countryside.
Looking for exclusive shopping, Milano is probably better then the Slovakian countryside :)
A lot of americans go for the big cities. London, Paris, Rome Wienna and Prague (the big five?). A lot of tourists, it feels safe and you will meet people who speaks english. Please tell me you are better then that.
Wanna see the nature?
Wanna go where you will meet no other americans?

I would say 4 countries in four weeks.
It could be less expensive to fly and take buses.

ryanair
easyjet
wizziar
eurolines

As mentioned above, you could easily spend the whole month in one country and just begin to take it all in.

You could do the capitals/big city run-London/Amsterdam/Paris/Rome. You will definately see a lot.

Or you could do two weeks in France and two weeks in Italy.

For cheap, head east. Greece is cheap, but expensive to get to from the mainland of Europe. Prague is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. I can't wait to go back there.

Sparky ..

Love the name .. my advice to is dream a little .. have a chat with the young one and choose 3 destinations each and just join the dots. You will have time for the many diversions you will find along the way .. travelling is first and foremost a PERSONAL CHOICE ..

There is little point is saying the Greek islands Santornini is great if you dont lke the beach and the heat and all you'll ever wanted to see is King Ludwig Castle ..

Bus or Train or both options for a month but I would suggest as a time saver that you look at the option of a discount flight for one long haul sector .. to save time backtracking. Still tend to think trains are friendlier than bus trips but aren't as cheap as they used to be.

Try to avoid the big city syndrome .. you know the Paris Berlin Rome Prague thing .. anyway .. my big 3 suggestions - just goggle them
Cesky Krumlov - Czech republic
Lauterbrunnen - Switzerland
The Vatican ( aka Rome)

You can see by now that a vague question gets such a wide variety of answers as to be practically useless. TT is not the place to be asking for an itinerary. With the best will in the world, everyone will have their personal favourites and you're in no position to be able to evaluate them.

You're just going to have to make some decisions of your own and then post again for more specific advice, something tha TT is good for.
