Hi

I have finally got summer vacation from university and looking very much forward to be getting abroad once again. I have all of august for a backpacking travel, but I am going to be travelling alone and I don't know where.
I have never travelled alone before, but in spring 2010 i had 5 months in Asia (Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore-Phillippines-China-Hong Kong-Vietnam-Cambodia-Thailand). I've also seen a little in East Coast USA (NY, Washington) and most of the Mediterranean cities in the western countries (Spain, France, Italy, Greece) in Europe.

My big question is now, where can/should I go alone as a single traveller in August - where can I be sure to find other backpackers? (never ever travelled alone - little bit scared but i'm in for the challenge) And on a reasonable budget as well (both getting there and being there)? I know there are many backpackers easy to meet in Asia, but as I have seen most of it, I'd rather do something else.

I liked Asia very much (weather, nature, culture, people, diving etc.), I've thought about USA, Mexico, Peru/Bolivia, UK, Eastern Europe, Indonesia, but I am not quite sure about going some of these places alone and about weather. I'm open for any(!) recommendations!

I'm a guy, 22 at that time and I live in Denmark where I am leaving from :-)

Thanks, I appreciate your help!

You will meet plenty of backpackers in all those places you mentioned...and many more...in August.

Its peak travel season in most of the world for Europeans and North Americans.

None of these places will have very bad weather in August...mostly warm and sunny days.

Cheapest budget wise (including getting there and back) will be Eastern Europe....Indonesia,Peru and Bolivia are also very cheap when you are there-but obviously flights are not!

The UK is expensive (similar prices to Denmark)..and the USA isn't cheap either.Mexico less than the USA but you still need an expensive flight.

Depends on what you want to do of course....but if you want a good mixture of the things you enjoyed in SE Asia I'd go with Peru and Bolivia or Indonesia.

Apart from the diving.....Mexico(even better,Belize,if you are in the Yucatan area of Mexico) or Indonesia for that ;-)

Stick to the typical tourist trails and you'll be fine anywhere.

Mexico:
D.F (the capital)
Bus to Oaxaca town
Puerto Escondido
Mazunte
Chagacua
(I didn't do more towns than these, but the rest of the typical trails goes to San Cristobal I guess, just use the wikitravel or Lonely planet itineraries)
You would meet lot's of American, European, Aussie and Israeli people.

Indonesia:
Jakarta
Yogyakarta
Bromo
Bali
Ramadan is in August, it's an amazing experience in Java, just make sure you don't travel on the last day, called Lebaran.
You would meet lot's of Dutch people in Java, and Aussies and Swedes in Bali.

Indonesia is cheaper than Mexico though, but if you are a typical Danish guy with blonde hair and very tall you will get a lot of attention, but the people are nice, S.E Asia style.

I would recommend Russia to you instead of Eastern Europe, but there aren't many young travelers there, and it's too expensive.
Anyway, those are the countries I have visited and lived in, just ask me if you have any questions!

Thank you for your replies! I really appreciate it.
None of you mentions Eastern Europe - isn't this a typical backpacking place? I've thought about (Poland, Slovakia) Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey.

Mexico sounds really interesting as well, going south from Mexico City to southeastern area.. But isn't it their rainy season, august?

Yes eastern Europe is a typical backpacker place I guess, I haven't been there so I don't know.

Yes rainy season, but don't worry too much about that, it usually rains for a few hours and is sunny the rest. Not sure about hurricanes though, apparently those happen on the Oaxacan side. I went in September, but they had some after that I think.

To get back to your original question, the only guaranteed place to find other backpackers would be Bali, Cancun, Thailand etc. These have young Westerners year round however it may not be very ''authentic''. No matter where you go you will find plenty of LOCALS that you could interact with, no matter what the season you could always find English speaking people traveling in their own country, so unless you need to travel with your "neighbor" any of your initial suggestions would be fine.
Not sure about the USA though, I feel like it's more of a place where people rent a car with friends and drive through...

Hi,

I'm going to be backpacking solo through Mexico from the 10th til the 24th of August if you want to catch up :)
After getting some advice from the lovely people on TT I'm planning on going to Mexico City, Acapulco, Puerto Escondido and Oaxaca but nothing is really set in stone.

I'm a 23y/o girl from Australia who is doing the solo trip for the first time too :)

I appreciate your replies. I've decided to go to Eastern Europe somewhere, so I will not be able to meet you in Mexico, but have a safe journey :) Thanks for your interest..
