Hi all,

I am a going to be in China next summer and was planning on taking the trans-siberian railway back to the UK. Does anyone have any experience taking this trip and know likely costs to do it cheaply?

Also, I saw that you can travel all the way from Singapore to Beijing before starting your journey and was really interested in that as it sounds like a real adventure. I was wondering if anyone had done that trip and had any advice about how it had gone: how long did it take? How expensive? Would you recommend it?

Any advice would be great. Am planning to travel in early June, so trying to think ahead now.

Thanks
Ben

For the Trans-Siberian (actually Trans Mongolian is better if you start from Beijing)there are hundreds of posts on here...use the search engine above on the right...and there is an excellent 'sticky'at the beginning of the Eastern Europe branch.

Costs vary widely depending on time of year, type of train, type of ticket, stopovers etc...and where you buy it.

For Singapore to Beijing,it can certainly be done overland...and is an excellent trip IMHO.

How long and how much depends.....I'd say 3 months plus, but no doubt many people have done it faster.Budget wise I'd be looking at about €3000....again,depends where you sleep, what you eat, which activities you do,how you travel.

Things you will have to think about in advance include your visas for China and Russia...which must be got before you arrive there.Probably easiest to get them from the embassy in your country (or else pay an agent to get them for you)...though a China Visa isn't hard to get in Bangkok for example, other places can be more difficult.

Russian Visas are a real pain in general...most people get an agency to handle that.Where are you living?

And what's your nationality? That can make a big difference too......

Welcome to Thorn Tree, Ben!

As it's been mentioned above, you'll find heaps of information already posted by using the search engine or looking at the relevant branches: about China, about the Trans-Siberian, about overland trips around South-east Asia...

From your post I'm guessing that you're thinking on doing the Singapore-Beijing trip before your "summer in China", right? How long do you have? What's your budget?

Technically speaking, you can+ travel overland from Singapore to Beijing in about a week, +non-stop, with a combination of trains and buses, but I think very few people here in TT would recommend you that (me included)... I would be looking at something like a few months...

Also, there are many possible routes to take, sp. after Bangkok, eg.: 1) BKK - northern Thailand - northern Laos - Kunming - Chongqing - Xi'an - Beijing; 2) BKK - Phnom Penh - Ho Chi Minh city - Hanoi - Hong Kong - Shanghai - Beijing; 3) BKK - Phnom Penh - Si Pan Don (southern Laos) - northern Laos/Vietnam - a thousand places in China...

As I've said, it's all up to what you feel like, the time you have, your budget, your visa restrictions, etc. etc.!
