Sheets - to bring, or not to bring?

Interest forums / Travel on a shoestring

I'm setting off for five weeks of backpacking through Europe in June-early July of this year. Naturally, I want my pack to weigh as little as possible, which brings me to my question - is bringing your own sheets neccessery in western Europe? Do most places provide them for free? Are you better off bringing them or not bringing them?

THANKS!

depends on where and when. MOst places will and all can provide them, and often charge for that. it will nearly always be to found in sites like hostelz or hostelworld. silk liners weigh much less, but cost $$ more.

I don't think I've come across a youth hostel in Western Europe that didn't provide their own sleeping sheets (either for free, or for a fee). I generally carried my own, though, because if they do charge for them, then it all adds up...

Don't bring them. You might encounter the rare hostel that charges but it's really cheap. It's not worth the extra hassle of carrying sheets with you for the couple bucks it'll save you. If you do decide on bringing a sleep sheet, just bring something crappy so if you want to pitch along the way, you can.

In some countries nearly ALL (genuine HI-type) hostels charge for them (Scandinavia). In others (where hostels are simply cheap, private, non-organized hotels) they are generally included. You will always (?) be told on the hostels homepage.
