In hindsight, have travellers that have been to the running of the bulls festival in Spain, and the Oktoberfest beer festival in Germany, found that it is easy to arrive and find cheap, decent accomodation etc in Pamplona/Munich, or is it advisable to pre-book tours for these events?

The tours I have found are quite pricy, but I wondered whether its because its near impossible to find reasonabky priced accomodation at that time.

No, you cannot just arrive in Pamplona and find accommodation during San Fermines (running of the bulls). Everything will be completely full and loads of people have to sleep outside in the park because there's nowhere else to sleep.

Similar applies for the Oktoberfest .

Take a look at this thread Munich's Oktoberfest on the cheap (last year's Oktoberfest-sticky) for heaps of more information.

You'll also find that accommodation in Pamplona is booked out months, if not a year, before the festival, and prices triple!

if you want to go to the Oktoberfest 2008, you should look for accomodation NOW!

Both require serious forward planning. UNLESS you take your bedroom with you! All that's required then is a place to park it. I shared a vw campervan with 3 others on a trip to San Fermines. The decision to go was only made a week before the event.

It might be worth looking into what it would cost you to rent a campervan for a couple of weeks and then on arrival rent out space in it. LOL

thanks all.

i would like to avoid booking a tour as they seem expensive, but I suppose if general accom. sky rockets at that time it may be well justified. thanks!
