....definitely jealous....but starting from the uk look at great escapade for your rtw ticket (around 1500 inc tax)....star alliance, one world and sky team have all become stupidly expensive and more limited (29 flights originally now down to 16, cutting out short hop options and around 3000 inc tax)....the virgin/singapore/airNZ mix of great escapade is fine for SE asia side trips (think indonesia/burma/laos/etc as short hops or even a backtrack to columbo)....would also give give the options from singapore to USA west coast of EITHER Perth, direct flight to NZ and pacific islands OR via Korea or Japan.....forget america west to east this time...too much distance and cost to explore sensibly....though you could consider up the west coast flying back to uk from vancouver....that is a nice taster for the best of USA though I wouldn't personally bother this time....just explore asia/australia/pacific....more than enough for 5 months.....a fast 5month route could be UK-tokyo-singapore-(choice, more than one of laos/vietnam/cambodia/indonesia - silk air allowed) - perth-auckland-raratonga for eg - LA - UK

don't forget to budget for travel insurance, which you must buy with your ticket.

Well there are two ways to decide where to go. One, based on what interests you the most. Two, based on where it is cheaper which makes no sense if it isn't where you are interested in.

Regarding US part from LA cross country to New York. How were you planning to do that and where were you planning to stay? Hostels are very few and far between in N. America and there is no cheap way to cross the continent. As for time, well 2.5 weeks is good for about one state.

I would look at Tryfan's suggestion and amend that to suit your needs. Get rid of the US, Australia, NZ, Fiji and save that for another time. Your budget would be more than enough for SE Asia and the Indian subcontinent.

Just bear in mind that Burma is considerably more expensive than the rest of SE Asia, with the exception of Singapore, and the costs in Borneo can also add up. Assuming that you'll want a beer here and there, a beer in a bar in Singapore will set you back approximately £8-9 a pint...yes you did read that correctly!

I guess my point was not clear enough.

If what interests you most is the USA, go there and get rid of the rest. Do NOT go where you are less interested in going, just because it's cheap.

I would rather spend 1 month somewhere I want to be than 6 months in SEA. The reality is that the popularity of SEA is PRIMARILY based on ONE thing. Cost. I understand that others may not agree but it ticks me off when people keep posting comments based on cost alone. It is only when 2 places are of equal interest that cost should be considered as a deciding factor.

With an apparent budget of 1200 x 5 = 6000 GBP you can afford to go to ANY of the countries you list. You just can't afford to go to all of them and in any case 5 months would be rushing it. So pick a couple that are of most interest and ignore comments about 'go here it's cheaper.'

The only time when all places are of equal interest is when none of them are of any particular interest, they're just on the sheep herd RTW list of countries.

OP, how long did the doctor give you to live? What are you trying to prove with this marathon?

Take a few smaller trips and stay places long enough to make friends.

Learn things and listen instead of just hear.
Keep asking about thier normal life and wars.

Why not go home a little wiser than when you left?

Ive just spent 6 months travelling SEA and would definetly recommend it. There's much more to do than just Thailand. We started in Thailand then went to Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, back to Thailand, west coast Malaysia, Singapore, Bali, Java, back to Singapore, east coast Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Thailand again then home. We did that on a budget of roughly £1000 a month (some countries are cheaper than others) but that includes going out drinking every night while away but we did stay in the cheapest hotels and hostels. Most of the travelling was done on busses which is quite time consuming but certainly the cheapest. Didn't spend more than 3 or 4 days in most places we went to so was on the move quite frequently. All in all i would certainly recommend it, particularly for a first time traveller who is basically looking to party for a few months in the sun!!!

Although, of course, there is a lot more to SEA than partying in the sun..........

Of course. Sorry didn't mean to make that sound like there's nothing else to do I just meant that if you enjoy parting, sunshine and excellent food then you really can't go wrong

On the other hand I would certainly recommend visiting such sites as Angkor Wat, Borobudur, Mount Bromo, the Cu Chi tunnels and Halong Bay etc along with some very interesting towns or cities such as Hanoi, Hoi An, Luang Prabang, Chiang Mai, Penang and Ubud.

There's no point going all that way and not do and see everything there is possible.

P.s possibly the best part is just how friendly and helpful the locals are.

Don't skip places like Ankor Watt or Tiger Balm Gardens etc., because they're just out of town or expensive.

have fun / not schedules.

talk at length with mucho foreigners. It pays off the longest. Nobody tries to convince.
