Hits guys I'm a 24 year old student who is planning my first RTW trip I will be booking my flights in advance and will be flying to:
Colombo
Bangkok
Overland to Singapore
Perth
Overland to Sydney
Auckland
Fiji
L.A
Overland to New York
Then home to the UK

I am planning on spending 5 months doing this trip...I am hoping to do it on a budget with staying in cheap hostels and cooking for myself in hostels rather than eating out !! However I do like a few drinks on a night so will go out a few nights. I will be more than happy to not to the fancy expensive excursions but to follow a guidebook and see the beautiful sites the world has to offer in the cheapest way !!

I have the money for flights and visas already so was wondering if anyone could offer me any advice as to how much GBP ££ I would need I was thinking maybe 1200 pounds a month ?? Or could I do it on less ??

This will be my first ever backpacking experience and would really like advice off like minded travellers with more experience than myself.

Thankyou

Kelly :D

Your budget works out at 40 pounds or roughly $60 US per day.

Hmmm

In Australia that it not enough, but in Thailand you could party and live like a king on it and still have ome change..

That will be the problem, you will be having a great lifestyle until you get to Australia and I know from experience and can be hard to bring costs back when you arrive in a more expensive destination after partying in cheap locations.

Travel and Accommodation in Australia and US will be your budget killer as you are travelling such vast distances on a short timeframe.

It can and has been done on that budget, but you may have to hitchike a little but preferably you should save a little more so you have a couple hundred extra pounds per month.

In relation to Hitch Hiking, check out www.hitchwiki.com for the basics of hitching and also detailed instructions of when where to hitchike from in most places in the world. Though I have hitched, I do not really enjoy it as I am to impatient.

You are probably making a rookie error and trying to fit to much in. Give us an estimated timeframe in each country, as this will help with more targeted advice.

Only two problems here.......too fast, and not enough money.

As above...your budget will be fine until you reach Singapore. After that, you won't even have enough for a hostel bed, transport and food...never mind beers ;-)

On the timeframe.....well,8 countries? (including across the US and across Australia) in 5 months...that gives you 2.5 weeks per country. That is more than enough for Singapore anyway......

Unless you are planning only to see the major cities you mention. But why go to NZ to see only Auckland?

Hiya guys

Thanks for the advice I did think that I was being too ambitious !! I need to think it through more :)

I do want about 5 months Away and I do want the time to appreciate the places so so defo a Rookie error trying to fit in too much...

I have £2000 for flights and visas to sort out for before I go and then I will have £6000 for the trip

Do you have any recommendations as to another path I could take I am not so much fussed if it isn't round the world as we say I will appreciate the sights wherever I am but Sri Lanka, Bangkok, Sumgapore are places I do want to see on this trip but any advice on a path after this ? Maybe I could go straight to Melbourne instead of travelling over Australia.

Thanks guys

To be honest, I am an Aussie. But even I would skip Asutralia at the moment. Not worth the money for what you see.

Spend longer in South East Asia and then head to the USA.. Travel Thailand. Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam and then head to the US.

Or why not just SE Asia?

You have the budget for 5 months comfortably..it will cost you a lot less in flights too.And there is a huge amount to see and do.

You could also do activities (eg diving, mountain climbing, treeking etc.) and go out for a few beers when you like ;-)

Thanks so much for the info guys...I think south east asia and then maybe just LA and New York could work for me...I havent really looked into south east asia so not really sure of the best places to see and do but if its cheap im sure its a good plan and lots for me to see :)

I've been to all of these places, except western Australia. I don't think 5 months is all that crazy, but I would question your choice to go to Australia, NZ and USA unless you plan to rent a car, which doesn't seem to be your idea. They are also very expensive. I'd recommend saving these countries for when you have the budget to rent a car and do them "properly".

Someone mentioned 2.5 weeks. I think that is too much for Fiji. 1 week would be more than enough for me. It might even be too much for Sri Lanka. It's a beautiful country, but it's tiny and after two weeks I'd be ready for something else. Then again, I travel at a high pace, up early, don't waste time, don't drink. Your mileage may vary.

Personally, I'd get bored spending 5 months in SE Asia only. I like more variation. But everyone's different. It's easy to get "lazy" in a country like Thailand. Find a nice place and settle down, stay for a month or two.

Just stick to SEA and the Indian sub-continent. Your budget will allow you to have an amazing experience without having to scrimp.

You could easily fill 5 months with a great variety of places:

Hong Kong
Vietnam
Indonesia
Borneo
Malaysia
Thailand
Vietnam
Philippines
Cambodia
Laos
Burma
Nepal
India
Sri Lanka
Personally I would love to go to Northern Pakistan as well, but not for everyone......
