Hi just came back after 10 days in Tioman and 4 days in KL , the trip was done wholly guided by Lonely Planet guide.Just came back from Malaysia yesterday and wanted to post my inputs so here goes:

Tioman:
1. First things first pick up a lonely planet guide, its worth its weight in gold.
2. Tioman accomodation options depend on what you are looking for, it is definitely not a party place, no drugs, night clubs and limited booze.
3. I stayed in Tioman for 8 days and the best location for somebody looking for the village experience and decent food. Air Batang is the best.
4. On ABC beach the prettiest place to stay in is at Bamboo chalets, around 100 RM per night, next is ABC chalets-slightly cheaper.
5. Tioman is expensive on all provisions sometimes marked up 100% on the price you pay in Mersing so stock up before you get there.
6. You need not do a snorkelling trip , you can just rent the gear and do it at Panuba, ABC Jetty or The Marine Park Tekek Jetty.
7. Food is slightly pricier but good.
8. The only guy who tried to scam us was a snorkel rent shop opposite marine park jetty at Tekek.
Have a nice trip.

Kl:
1. We stayed at YMCA, a great place to stay and very very central.
2. the only place where Lonely planet went wrong was the reccomendation on Sunway lagoon, I paid RM 120 per person for a park which was quite average and highly overpriced.
3. Try Genting instead, it has a hill station feel and definitely a better park with better rides.

By the way we were a family of four (2 kids).

the highlight was definitely Tioman amazing place.
