I woke up this morning and traveling was on my mind!
I'm thinking of Rome the end of Oct. for about 2 -3 weeks.

I love taking pictures and Roaming around (no pun intended).
Has anyone been in Italy at this time of the year? Any suggestions
on doing it on a budget? I'll be carrying juat a small back pack and a camera.

Is it best to make rail reservations before I leave (to save money) or be flexible?

Any suggestions are help espicially the best places to stay with the Euro bieng so high!

Thanks Robert

Thank you so much for this information extremely helpful! Looking at the link you posted I had no idea that I could get a bed in Rome for $16 - 20 dollars a night! I must buy my ticket today such a good price $647 r/t from San Francisco.

I don't know Italy all that well. My heart's desire is to go to Assis and see the St Francis church. Any idea how much I should budget for 2 -3 week trip? Any books you can recommend. At this time of the year will most of the small town be closed? Renting a car the way to go to really see the country or is that really a hassle?

Thanks again for your time and information.

Robert

Hi Robbie, I'm italian and I can tell you that in october you don't need rail reservation at all: it's low low season, very few tourists, no national holidays, empty hotels and so on..... Cons: can be quite rainy; some restaurateurs are on vacation in the Maldives.....
Assisi? It's beautiful and evocative.
I suggest you to travel by train (http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html): it's cheap and you can reach almost any place.
Ciao.
