Interrailing through Europe - advice on what cities to visit

Interest forums / Travel on a shoestring

Hi Guys,

Myself and several friends are going interraling through Europe for a month from mid August, we really want to see some great places and possibly do some sporting activities if possible.

Any insight into the best cities to visit or any routes that people took interrailing would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance...

S.

It really depends on what your interests are, what you want to see and do.

Amsterdam for grass sports

If you are traveling by train, it is easy to reach the big cities. You have a month the time where do you start?

Poster 1 is right. Are you in to art galleries? Or architecture? Or mountain scenery rather than cities?

As cities go, you can't beat the old favourites, Paris, Rome, Venice, Prague, Stockholm. And Krakow, with nearby Auschwitz a must-see. And I love Istanbul, where east meets west, that's in a whole other ball game. I love Athens, too, for the Akropolis and plaka, though some hate it. Vienna I can take or leave, though again, some would disagree. Budapest is nice, but not quite as good as Prague or Krakow.

The choice is yours, I'd get a guidebook and start researching what might grab you.

Route-wise, there's some great scenic routes through the alps in Switzerland, including the Gotthard route Zurch-Milan and Arlberg Zurich-Innsbruck.

InterRail-wise, I've put some explanation of how the pass works, when you do and don't need to make reservations and pay supplements, and how much those supplements are likely to be, at www.seat61.com/InterRail.htm</a>

You are going to Europe and you really have no idea what you want to see or where you want to go? See #4.

Interlakken, Switzerland for sure.

This will get you started.

Hi,

Royal magic city of Krakow for sure. Also recomend Gdansk - nicest old city on Baltic sea. I like also Warsaw, its medieval sights such as a skyscraper downtown.
Strongly recomend!!
