this is frequently discussed on the W Europe branch.

the consensus on this branch is that you need about EUR 45-50 per person per day for W Europe as an absolute minimum. This includes a dorm bed or cheap shared double room, 3 self-catering or fast-food meals, local transport and one activity per day. It excludes long haul travel, drinking sessions, full sit down meals, and lots of expensive attractions.

However, i guess most people would spend more than that per day.Depends on what you do.

Fast food meals. Kabob type or local made sandwich.(maybe by you in a plaza. Parks are a tad too isolated.

Shun Micky D's and Bugerking. Ain't no tellin' what's in 'em. Very expensive.

Eat at little mom and pop cafés in paved alleyways. Where locals pay no tourist prices. Talk to people who'll speak any English. Many lived stateside.

I did 3 weeks in Europe for about 1500 euro on a backpacking trip. It includes train tickets between 5 cities (5 separate train journeys), accommodation in hostels, food, daily transport, attraction fees, etc.

Granted, we could have done a lot better had we done self-catering which would have been ideal in Paris and to some extent, Italy. But London is cheap with some free attractions, so maybe the amount might differ.

The only travel pass you need is unlimited public transport within cities for the number of days you're there. I don't see the savings in Europe railpasses AT ALL. Book inter-city tickets separately. Hopefully this frees up a bit more money for everything else!

At #12 - 'I don't see the savings in Europe railpasses AT ALL. Book inter-city tickets separately.' - Hurrah. So little confirmation of this. See #2.

And are you still there amyjane85? Is our time being wasted?
