Hi

Looking for a bit of advice. I would like to go to Europe for 3 weeks, but I am not sure how much money I would need. The itinerary is looking roughly - Paris, Germany, Switzerland, Italy (and any other advice would be great, not really fussed as long as Italy is in there). We were looking at Inter rail train pass 21 days continuous and can get cheap flights going to Paris. So we were thinking this would be our main starting point. We were thinking it would be between 10-20 Euros a night.

I went travelling last year in Asia so I am worried I might under budget for Europe. We don't mind roughing it but a ball point figure would be great as my sister is panicing about how much she needs.

Thanks

10-20 euros a night....do you mean only accommodation?

That's not enough, even for a hostel bed,in most places in those countries.....you should budget about 25-30 euros a night for a dorm bed (though you will sometimes get one for less). These are not cheap destinations.

If you are talking daily budget (sleep,food,sightseeing...not including the Interrail pass ) I'd say a minimum of 50€ per person per day.So,3 weeks = 1000 euros per person, plus Interrail and flights.MINIMUM !

That's living pretty cheap-dorm,supermarket or fast food (not flash restaurants)...not too many admission charges...very limited pub/club alcohol intake ;-)

Think again money wise, most especially if all destinations are cities.

Read this - http://europetrainsguide.com/Advice/Rail-Passes/Rail-passes-%E2%80%93-to-buy-or-not-to-buy.html - one of many pieces of advice on the probable foolishness of a rail pass in whatever form - especially as you have no plan and cannot possibly tell whether there is true value in a pass.

At 50E per day you are really at the very bottom end I think lucapal. More of the survive the trip rather than enjoy the trip end of things. To me there is not much point in going at all if you can't enjoy it much. I'd want as close to double that amount as I could manage.

As I said,that's a minimum.....I'd agree that the more you have,the better......

If you only have 400 euros (based on 20 euros x 20 days), you really need to rethink your plans. Maybe just concentrate on Italy, and go for a shorter time.

museums can cost about 10Euro.
beds 30
dorms 25+-.

Eat at mom and pop caf´s, in paved alleyways. Where locals pay no tourist prices.
And kabob shops have other cheap dishes.

Yes. Stay in Itallt and learn and enjoy.

Come back later.
