Ive heard of people cleaning for a couple of hours in return for their room, i know its not going to happen everywhere, But Whats Th Likely Hood of Finding Somewhere Long The Road That Might Offer a few Extra Nights At No Cost For A Bit of Work? Ill Be In Eastern Europe

Cheers, Oli

It is possible. When I was in Eastern Europe I met a few people that were doing it. Only ever saw it in bigger hostels in the bigger cities. Usually the people staying for free were sharing a small room, with just mattresses for beds. Work consisted of cleaning in the day and helping to organise and run things in the evening for the guests (usually some kind of bar crawl type thing). The best bet is to get friendly with the people running the place, obviously they are more likely to keep people they like around, they are not going to care about qualifications etc.

I think it is a decent plan if you want to stay somewhere for a long period of time, but I would not rely on it and you are not getting a great deal. You can get a bed in a really good hostel for under $15, sometimes even under $10 in the majority of places in Eastern Europe. Working 3 hours per day in exchange for less than $15 doesn't make sense. You are almost certainly better off working at home and saving some extra money before you go.

It's a possible vs. probable question olly90. Possible, yes but how probable is anyone's guess. You might as well ask for a weather prediction for each day of your trip.

There is nothing wrong with looking for ways to SUPPLEMENT your travel funds and extend your time on the road. But COUNTING on finding ways to pay for your travel is never a good idea.

couple of years ago, i did this for a B&B in baltics, besides giving me a bed, they paid a small allowance.

That money allow me another 2 months to prolong my trip :)

You guys also need to keep in mind that if you have an accident while working illegally (it is illegal work you know), then your insurance will not cover you. So the equation is possibly this. Value of work vs. cost of hospital bill. Realistically, it is not a high possibility but it is a HIGH cost indeed if it does occur.

I Don't think it is Illigal As I'm An Eu Citizen So Can Work Anywhere In The Eu. But Im Not to Worried About Insurance issues To Be Honest.
Thanks For The feedback

Parisgoing, again, when suggesting anything to do with work it is important to add the caveat, 'If you can legally work in that country.' Helpx, workaway, WWOOF, et al exists in many countries where someone who is there as a tourist (no work permit/visa) cannot legally participate. That an organization exists in a country does not automatically mean you can participate.

For example, it is illegal for a tourist to participate in any such organizations in the US, the UK, Spain, to name a few. On the other hand it is legal for a tourist to participate in Canada for up to 30 days. You have to check the law for each country you are considering doing it in.

If you then choose to participate illegally, that's your business but if you know whether it is illegal or not, you can weigh the potential consequences against the gain and made an informed decision, not get a rude awakening as this girl did.
