Oh dear. You've totally misread my comment.
I am suggesting that 'We do not' look down on tours. Can't you see that?
The statement reads.... I understand that this forum tends to look down on tours
And I've posted.... Where do you get that impression from?
Where on earth - anywhere, do you see sarcasm in that question? You've totally lost me.

I haven't seen any anti-tour comments on this thread (yet)........

Nor have I.
That's why I've asked where the impression came from, that the forum actually does.
Hope you understand that clearer now.

Billy

Are you being sarcastic ?!

Do we 'look down on tours' here?..I haven't seen any anti-tour comments on this thread (yet)........

Ok...I wasn't sure if it was a joke or you were serious!

On this thread there hasn't been any anti-tour stuff....on the branch as a whole I think there often is.

Nope - just asking a question, that's all....
Peace.

As the forum overall tends to be used primarily by independent travellers vs. a package tourist it is true to say that there is often an anti-tour bias to comments. Bus tours of 12 cities in 10 countries in 14 days will usually get negative comments. Tours that are known for drinking more than anything else (Contiki et al) will also get negative comments.

So I would say the OP is right in her observation batty.

Originally, the OP wrote that she was travelling alone. Later she clarified that she was travelling as part of a Top Deck Tour. So not alone at all in my opinion. Interesting that she thinks she is travelling alone.

So she is taking a tour of X number of places by bus in Y number of days. Her big issue is whether within that group of 20-30 people, to share a room with 3 others or with only 1 other female. I think JimBurns got it right in #17.

Alazabel, consider this your first anti-tour comment if you wish, although I think there would be more by now if people had realized you were in fact talking about a tour, not about going to hostels independently and asking about whether to book a dorm room or private room. That is in fact what most answers have obviously assumed. ie. why else would people be telling you you have to pay for 2 beds; why would I have wrote about not booking ahead; etc..

Please tell us how many places (and which) you will visit in how many days. That is what most object to about tours like this. Trying to see too much in too little time.

I'm doing a 18 day tour where I visit 9 different cities in 9 or so countries. i'm aware that i'm likely not to have enough time to see everything i want to see/do in all the cities but doing a tour seems easier to me as i'm an inexperienced traveler. it's a personal choice. i'm aware of the possible drawbacks but i prefer to do a tour. i'm not an only child. i guess i'm just sheltered.

Are these organised tours spending a day in every city and then a day in transit to the next city a good way to explore a country and get to know the culture and people, i would say definitely not. But will a first time traveler have a fantastic time, make friends and learn to sleep in a dorm with a few humans while seeing some of the most famous sites in the world.... i would say, almost definitely.

No question it is to each his/her own alaizabel. Just remember as I said, most here are more independent in their means of travel and so we are of course biased. As a first time to Europe it's fine to take the tour if you think you will be more comfortable that way.

It would be interesting if you came back and posted after your tour, your impressions vs. going independently next time.

Timewise, received wisdom here on the TT is that you need a least 3 days to get a feel for a place at all. So you will read here about the 'Rule of 3s'. Which says, never spend less than 4 nights/3 full days in a place unless it is just an overnight stop between A and B. The 4th night allows for a travel day between places and is often overlooked in counting time in a place.

There is also a 'Rule of 3s' for packing. One to wear, one to wash and one to spare. You could apply that rule even on your bus tour. The two commonest mistakes travellers make is trying to see/do too much in too little time and packing too much.

solo travel has a shorter waiting line. And you're not told whaen to leave town....just as you're finding friends you wouldn't have.

We yank tourists just talk about home.

The best Yank tourist I ever met actually didn't tell me that much about where he was from. It was a refreshing change not to hear about how much better home was. He went on to comment about how us brits could visit more countries for free thanks to not having an idiot like George W Bush pissing everyone off.
