Hi,

Really hoping some of you budget travel experts can help us out.

We are taking part in a competition for Virgin Radio's Breakfast Show. We have been given £100 and 5 days to get as far from London as possible. There is pride, a round the world trip and money being raised for a Cancer charity at stake.

What we need are tips on how to get out of Krakow and travel on in any direction away from London. We'll be in Krakow from tomorrow afternoon, and are hoping to move on by late afternoon. Whether we end up on a plane, a train, a coach, a helicopter, a horse or hitching, we just want to get the most miles for our meagre funds. Obviously the ideal would be to find some way to do it for free. Other teams seem to have lots of connections, so we're just having to put our faith in luck and the kindness of strangers :)

Any other general tips on how to blag/travel for as little as possible to anywhere else welcome!

If you can think of any ideas, please message us, or call us on 00447771868542.

Thanks, Matt and Matt (Brieley and Ratcliffe)

PS. We think it'd be silly not to help people while doing this. You can show your support by donating to Christie's Against Cancer http://www.justgiving.com/mattandmattontheroad

and no visa I suppose?
from Krak: nightbus to Lviv, UKR (=visdafree for EU), then only THERE buy train tix: lugansk is about as far away as you can get (direct train, taking some 30 hrs ev 2nd day, or via Kyiv+change again), dont know the km, can find it all in poezda.net. NightBUS is 70 PLN=about 20 eur, trains IN UKR, use PLATSKART (see seat61 for a general idea) maybe 15 eur, whole way, (you brits should learn to get used to the new currency, maybe next idea for virgin). Beyond Luganks bus possible to last village before Russky border.
OR to Krym/Simferopil/Sevastopil, same idea for train, DK if thats longer (guess not), or ODESA, and hope+pray for weekly boat to Turkey to go on time/in time.
but for a much furhter dest in that timeframe and using of Lowcost air allowed (??!!)_head for Turkey, overland into iran or Georgia/Armenia from there. easily do-able in that time.

I think your first mistake was going to Krakow. How did that happen?

Are you allowed to beg for more money to spend or are you limited to spending only the 100?

You should have got much farther than Krakow from London to start with. You should not have gone anywhere that is not a major international hub. From Poland I'd head for Frankfurt to try and get on to an international flight.

At Frankfurt airport I'd try begging for money. Approach business men on their own. Not couples. Explain it is a charity event. Show some piece of paper that shows them that, if you can. Go to the Lufthansa and Quantas desks and ask to speak to a supervisor. Explain the event and ask what flight they have to a distant destination that has empty seats and on which they could give you free seats or a very reduced price. Tell them how little money you have. Tell them you will make sure that their helping you because of the charity will be publicized on National radio and TV. What you really want is a flight to Australia. About as far away as you can get.

Ideas that get you to Turkey or the Russian border aren't going to be nearly far enough to win. YOU need to think MUCH BIGGER than that.

sleep in bus depots, train stations and airports...and starve..just spend the money on travel. Beg.
