First time backpacking in Asia!!

Thanks for replies, reading into indonesia, India and Borneo.
There has been the recent bombings in Mumbai and from what ive read there is some unrest in parts of India and has been for many years, and previous attacks Westerners/places visited typically by westerners. I just wanted some ideas from people who have visited India recently and their opinions on how safe it feels. I realise its a huge country and these attacks are not that often... but its good to research where youre going a bit!!!

I have been to India a few times over the past two years, and have never felt unsafe at all. I am a solo woman traveller. Indian ppl are generally very helpful and supportive. I spend most of my time in rural communities though, and stay clear of the larger cities. I was concerned for my safety only once, when I was on the same train as a travelling politician. The crowds lining the station platforms at each of the train stops was very unnerving, and I seriously considered getting off the train, and waiting for another one--but I didnt, and all was fine.
Of course, I take the normal precautions.
I love India, and while it does take a lot of 'work' and the touts are difficult--its well worth it.
