I'd disagree with #1. While hitchhikers are not super-visible, hitchhiking is still done and it works. I hitchhike at least 20,000 km a year around Europe, and many of my circle of friends are just as active. While my initial motivation was saving money, I enjoy the fact that, done properly, it can be faster than any bus and many trains.

Take a look at Hitchwiki. It has plenty of tips on how to get out of various European cities and some pointers for beginners. If you'll be Couchsurfing, you should stay with CS hosts who are members of the Hitchhiking group on that website. They'll be more tolerant of uncertain arrival times, and they can teach you things you might not find elsewhere.

Avoid mitfahrgelegenheit. You have to pay, and quite often the whole arrangement is more complicated than just getting to the right petrol station whence you can get a free lift in 30 seconds.

LP shoestring book. Get "Europe Through the Back Door" by Rick Steves, from your local library.

I don't see whats the problem for paying. The payment is invariably used for petrol. It's much like going with a bunch of mates on a trip and splitting the costs of petrol. Not a big problem. If I did hitch, I would probably chip in money for petrol anyway. Its not as complicated as t seems. But each to their own. I found it easy to use. Although I thought it was only going to take a few hours - we got in well after 12 midnight in Munich.

I'm a fan of both hitchhiking/Hitchwiki and Mitfahr in Europe. Sometimes I use Mitfahr just to get to the first autobahn gas station in a bad place to start hitchhiking like Frankfurt. The Mitfahr interface is in English but a lot of the ads are in German. As a 19 year old and first time in Europe, try Mitfahr first to get a feel for being in Europe and seeing how it goes.

Well, that's my advice if it was warm! Shame it wont be that way for you
