Hi all,

I'm 26, single and looking at doing some travelling (2-3 months) next year (2014) at some point. I really have no idea where to start in terms of planning and organising?! Or... where to go?! I quite fancy Asia/Thialand/Aus because it's been highly recommended.

The reasons I'm seeking advice so early is finanically really. How much money will I need/use. I don't want to completely rough it, at the same token I'm not expecting 2/3/4 star service either. I just want a happy medium really.

I'm sure you've all had this question asked a million times but any advice/guideance for a newbie would be appreciated!!

Thanks guys&gals

P.S I like getting drunk and meeting new people and generally having a laugh!

Read the Community Guidelines, read the FAQs, read some guidebooks, do some online searching and reading, scroll down and read threads on branches here that interest you and THEN post here with questions you have not found answers to. You are expected to do your own homework first.

Yes, it has been asked a million times and answered nearly as many times. There is nothing unique about your question.

If you've only got 2-3 months then go to either SE Asia or Australia and not both.

The cost will vary greatly dependent upon which option you generally make. For example, in Australia, you'd be looking at close to £3k per month, especially if you intend to drink a lot.

As #1 says, you will need to do your research first and decide what you want to see/do etc. SE Asia can either be very very cheap (Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand to an extent) or very expensive (Burma and Singapore). As you say you like drinking, a pint of beer in Singapore is between £8-9, and one of the big bottles of Tiger you get in the supermarket here for £1.50 or so is £2.50 in the hawker centre I ate in some nights.

OP

The first thing I'd do is read a guidebook or two (and look on here as well).

You will find plenty of budget estimates for every country.

As a rough guide on those two (though it varies greatly, according to where you stay, what you eat, which activities you do and, yes, how much you drink ;-).......you can get by in Thailand on about £20-25 a day.In Australia maybe 4 times more.So there is a big difference.......

OK, start with this. For 3 months save up 4500 GBP not including airfares. Then save another 4500 for 'getting drunk'. When you have the 9000 saved, come back and post questions.

I also plan on travelling to South America (Peru, in particular) and Thailand - as well as South Africa & Greece next year (yes, lots of time and money saved - quitting my 8 to 5 job and going). One of the most helpful sites/blogs I've found is Nomadic Matt . He lists lots of buget travelling help ... also, he has destination guides that are quite handy (including how much you will spend - estimated - on food/hotel/hostel).
