Hey there!
Im planning a solo trip around europe in may 2008...i have saved AUD$10,000 and by the time i am going i will hopefully have saved around AUD$16,000...is this enough for say 3 months backpacking around western europe? i have no real set itinerary..im going to start in London and work my way from there...one of my Aunty's is sceptical that this will be enough..she says ill need around $20,000...is she right?

I have asked this question to a few Europeans I have met travelling in China recently (I live in Beijing) My question is how long will $10,000US last me and the general consensus is about 3/4 months out of season and less if I'm travelling at peak season. The downside of offpeak travel in Europe seems to be that a lot of things are closed. Heating, staff etc to expensive to maintain when there is no one paying the entrance fees. Would be interested to hear some other opinions on this...

hey will robinson86, I know this is a bizarre off chance but would you pm me, as I know someone by your name in Aus and was just wondering if ....

qwovadis..no she doesnt backpack at all! thats what annoys me so much! she has all these ideas about it and is constantly giving me reasons not to go..she's done europe a few times and its been 5 star all the way..she knows nothing about backpacking at all!!
i feel confident that ill be able to do it on $15,000 or $16,000!
Sorry about the double post...don't know how I did that, it was late at night, that's my excuse anyway.....
You might get more help on here if you translated your AUD$ into £s or €s.
I can assure you most people on here won't have a clue what $16,000 is in 'real money' - 'real' in terms of useable in Europe.

I'm not a cheap traveller particularly, but I've found a rough rule of thumb for me was around $1000 AUD per week - this included a mix of hostels/hotels, some weeks i'd blow it but some weeks i'd come under that. I never had to miss out on anything I wanted to do so it seemed a good amount to budget on. I definitely could've done it cheaper if I'd needed to. I reckon your budget of $16,000 for 3 months should be ok, as long as you're careful and stick to budget.

Should be fine AUD$16,000 is 10,000€ .. for 90 days 110€ /day .. minimum doable budget approved by many is 50€ a day incl travel.
Just watch the accomodation cost and the food and keep a track of your per country spend so you know which ones cost more and which ones cost less so you can do a runner for a cheap one if you are running out of cash ..
May & June is not peak so cheaper rooms should be easily had. July things tighten up in most of the tourist centres so costs will rise.
You can save some bucks if you organise your transport well but I's stress that you keep it flexible cos you'll change your mind.
