I seek to learn to live while living. To me, this means I embrace my love of travel and photography for short affordable jaunts.

To this end, I wonder if folks have philosophies on making decisions about where to go and how to make it happen.

My subject matter of interest is "the spirit," loosely defined. As such, it along with flight and travel cost, last minute serendipitous opportunities are the controlling factors.

when considering these, I am winnowing down my options to Guatamala or Istanbul.

Any thoughts on how you might go about decidiing between these two locales. I am flying from the East coast of USA. I expect to be traveling for 7-10 days and thus will limit my movement to 1-3 locales once in country, NO MORE. Amazingly, flight costs are only a wee bit more for istanbul.

Thanks for any wisdom.

I base my travel decisions on what I want to do in a place ;-)

If I want one type of trip I choose one place, another type of trip another place.

What do you want to do on your trip?...You have 2 completely different possible destinations, with completely different things to see,do and experience.

Some posters will suggest ditching both destinations - and others will give you a mountain of info recommending one over another.
It's all down to personal taste - and your likes and dislikes.
What's interesting to one traveller - can be totally uninteresting to another,

When do you travel?

Weather can be an important factor for my travel decisions.

Post this question on the Central America branch and on the Eastern Europe branch(For some funny reason Turkey belongs to the Eastern Europe branch.), you`ll get far more opinions than here.

I agree with #1 and 2: it's up to what you feel like doing/learning/seeing/etc. at the moment: I've been to both places and I liked them a lot for different reasons!

I also agree with #3: if you can't make a decision, weather can help you: right now it's quite cold and rainy/snowy in Istanbul, and a lot nicer in Guatemala (sp. Petén, in the north) though it can be chilly up at the mountains.

As I said, I love both destinations and I recommend you go to both sooner or later! :)

That said, in my opinion, and considering that you only have 7-10 days and you want to take it easy, Istanbul might be better (if you don't mind the weather), as you could spend all your time exploring this fantastic and unique city -different from the rest of Turkey-, and get to know it fairly well. On the other hand, Guatemala is large and very varied, and you'd have to spend your 7-10 days only in one specific region, eg. Antigua Guatemala and Lake Atitlán, or the Mayan Ruins of Petén (sp. Tikal); otherwise, you'd have to spend a lot of time on the road. I would probably leave Guatemala for another time when you can have at least 3-4 weeks to travel.

Wherever you choose, have a great trip!

Another possible consideration is jet-lag, given that you don't have much time Guatemala will be less of a problem in terms of jet-lag.

Thanks to each of you for helping me with what I know were tough to answer vague questions. Deeply appreciated. For what its worth, I've decided to extend the trip and head to Turkey. Guatamala next up in a year or so!

PS: I would've said exactly the same if you'd chosen Guatemala! ;D
