Two years ago I stayed at this place near the railway station, it was very nice and quite reasonably priced by Venice standards

I stayed in April in the cheapest place Venice had to offer (that I could find anyway): Camping Jolly.

It was 13 Euro - but it was a shared trailer next to a highway interchange in Mestre. But I knew before from a satellite picture what the catch was and it was fine with me and only 13 Euro. You get what you pay for.

You could also try the Youth Hostel which is central (it is on one of the Islands) but it will probably choc a block full of people.

i stayed at the hi hostel mentioned above, its on guidecca, not far as long as u go on the right ferry to the mainland! i think it was 18 euros, and its nice and quiet so u can get good sleep. there is a curfew and lockout though. u can book online at www.hihostels.com<BR>

As there's not really any budget accomm on the island itself, most backpackers stay in / around Mestre, which is a short train ride away. Prob is, some of the hostels advertised as in Venice are in fact a fair drive from the (Mestre) station, which complicates things, particularly later at night when the public transport stops.

LP lists some hostels in Venice itself, but most don't have websites and must book out quickly. They include

Ostello di Venezia (in Giudecca - 041 523 82 11)
Foresteria Valdese (041 528 67 97)
Ostello Santa Fosca (041 71 57 75)

I won't bother giving you the name of the place I stayed at as it was out of town and a bit of a rip off

try Archie's rooms (no reservation, just show up around 9 a.m.): 50€ for a double, shared shower and toilet right around the corner, free internet. It's a 10min walk from the station along the main drag in direction of Rialto.
As crazy as it is, they are hardly ever fully booked (because they are too lazy to make reservations), not even during Carnevale. it's my regular place to stay for 6 years now...
