buying gadget travel insurance if you're already abroad

I'm with worl;d nomads and although iv never made a claim, they really do seem to be the best thing going. they also cover you for a lot of things others dont, like scuba diving and motorbiking. the excess is so people dont go claiming silly stuff, maybe just insure the really expensive stuff and suck it up if you lose the smaller stuff? I'm taking a very small laptop for this purpose, its cheap and easy to replace

If you want a small/no excess you are going to pay for it. The major reason to take out travel insurance is to be covered for medical expenses, not to have a £300 camera replaced in case of robbery. Furthermore travel insurances only cover robbery/theft, not lost or damage stuff and refund only the used value, maybe less, so you probably won't get stuff replaced anyway. The hassle of getting a police report (bribe/pay them to write one) etc, might not be worth the small amount you will get in the end. So the excess means that only serious incidence gets reported.

I'm from UK also. I was using WorldNomad because I kept updating while already abroad, but now I've found two companies, both with London offices, that will insure you if already abroad, and MUCH MUCH cheaper than WorldNomads. Not sure about specifically insuring gadgets, but both are good about answering emails so perhaps you can ask them. The one I chose is called 'True Traveller', and there's another one called DUinsure, which is slightly cheaper.

Thats why I don't get a digital slr camera. I'd rather lose $100 to a theaf, than $400.
