I'm travelling around Europe from early Feb to mid March and suspect I'll need a warm jacket. I don't want to spend too much on something I'll only really need for 6 weeks, but know it should be decent-ish. I'm in Australia, so it's currently summer and not many places have jackets around at the moment, so I was wondering whether it'll be cheaper to buy something once I get there (first stop London), or if I should hunt down off-season specials which I may be a bit late for anyway. My travel companion is looking for something second hand, but I'm a size 16-ish and I find that not many op shops/2nd hand shops have much in my size, and ebay doesn't seem much help either.

(Here's a list of the countries I'll probably be visiting: UK, Spain, France, Poland, Hungary, Austria, Czech Rep, Germany, Belguim, Lux, Netherlands)

Thanks

To cover all those countries in the allotted time you'll be moving fast enough to work up a sweat. LOL

Nothing is set in stone, those are tentative countries and mostly just a taste of each except for Spain which will be a road trip wheeeeee But I mentioned the countries so you get an idea of the type of cold I'll be experiencing.

I'd take a fleece top or vest along with a watterproof outer layer. Also a hat or toque that covers the ears and gloves. That's all you should need unless you plan on going skiing or something.

In Belgium winter sales start in early January. You'll be too late to take advantage of that. After the sales, stores start selling summer clothing and it will be very difficult to find a winter jacket.

I am from Australia too, and my advice is not to buy it there! You wont find something warm enough! I spent about €130 on mine and it is very warm. I prob could have got a cheaper one. also, bring thermals, pants and tops. Even thick tights to wear under jeans are really great.
