I've been living in Ireland for the past year, but my time here is drawing to an end. My girlfriend (who lives back in the United States) is going to be flying over for my last month, and I'm buying her ticket. Now here is the complicated part: She's flying in from New York on May 24th and then flying back out to Austin TX (my hometown) with me on June 19th. Now I've found open an open jaw ticket that would do that for her and it costs $839 after taxes and fees, that price was $25 cheaper 2 days ago and it was non stop whereas now it has a layover in London. Is this a sign that tickets are about to make a jump, and that I should jump on the price now. Or should I hold out a little bit longer and see if any summer deals pop up?

hard to determain..personally whenever i buy tickets i watch them for a while to see if it gets any cheeper but as soon as i see the price rise i jump at it before it goes any higher, though after buying tickets ive never gone back to see the prices after.. guess im to scared to have possiably missed a good deal

Generally speaking seats are divided into classes - I'm not talking about business, economy... - each class has a certain number of seats at that price, Though these classes may have slight differences in terms and conditions many are exactly the same so the cheapest class gets sold first then the next and the next and so on. The jump you saw is most likely because when you initially looked at the flight there was just a couple seats left in the cheaper class and they got sold so it jumped to the next class. But on the direct flight that was considerably more expensive so which is why it's now showing the one via London.
Now someone may cancel their flight and suddenly that seat at that class is available again but you can't really count on this. The airline may also decide to have a sale but again you can't necessarily count on this.
Bottom line is - the longer you wait the more expensive tickets are likely to get.

Completely agree with Toad.....buy it now.Its possible (cancellation or travel agent sale)that the price will fall again...but very unlikely.

Much more likely that they will sell the tickets at this price and move up to the next price band......

Best deals are on Tuesdays in the US when the new specials are put on line. With the price of oil going up and up it is expected that plane prices are only going to up between now and the summer.
