Hi all,
My wife and I (professional people), at the end of an 18month Australia to Europe overland would like to stay, for one month or so in November/December 2007, in a self-serviced apartment, studio, loft etc. Things we would be looking for is a mild winter temperature, privacy, beautiful landscape, good market, hot water, cooking facilities and low price! We are both in our 40’s, have clean habits and wouldn’t mind looking after pets or a house or whatever. In fact we have missed our pets very much on this trip.
Therefore, would be grateful if anyone would have any ideas of suitable locations or accommodation in mewhere like Crete, Malta, Cprus, Turkey or Greece. Many thanks.

Richard,
You should be able to get a house or apartment quite cheaply anywhere in that region but are you after beach or mountain views?
In my view, the coastal areas throughout this region are very similar or it would boil down to the quality of the room and facilities. Turkey would clearly be the cheapest and some of the larger touristy towns like Antalya would met the facilities you require but apparently its the wet season there in November/december.

Try a few housesitting websites - I cannot guarantee that anything will be available in the locations that you want in the time you want, but it is worth looking. Basically, you look after the owners home, pets etc. while they are away, in return for free accommodation. The ideal is a win win situation - the owner gets increased home security with someone in the house, plants get watered, pets get to stay in their familiar environment with hopefully someone who will stick to their usual routine, and the housesitter gets free accommodation (though of course if pet care is involved there may be restrictions on taking overnight stays away, weekend breaks will be out, and you will have to be committed to following the owners wishes). If your there for a long stay you may be asked to do basic maintainence chores like cutting the grass regularly or some routine cleaning. This is a situation where older travellers can have an advantage as owners are more likely to feel comfortable leaving their house in the hands of an older person who is hopefully more settled and who have looked after their own home rather than a young person straight out of high school who is party mad and never left their parental home before.
