Hi all and thanks in advance for any advice!

My fiancee and I are to be married in October. We currently live in Jersey / work in Manhattan. We are planning on ditching the jobs and going out for 6 months of cheap travel around the US, seeing what place we'd like to end up for the next few years. We will have a secure $10,000, with some money to dip into if needed for emergencies. We plan to search for cheap 1 bedroom sublets in each area for 1 month stays at a time. We also have camping gear and may spend up to a month camping in a national park (obviously more in a warmer climate at this time).

Essentially was just looking for some advice on anyone who has done it on this type of budget before and where unexpected costs may have come in that we're not seeing. We are usually able to eat for cheap (we spend just over $100 a month now on food for 2 of us as we shop primarily at farmers markets). We have our own big car, so the only issue with that is fuel / unexpected repairs.

Current list of areas we are looking to spend a full month each (as we're from the states and I've been around a good deal to many areas, though only briefly, we at least have a decent understanding of the pricing changes per area): Boulder Colorado, SF Bay Area California, Portland Oregon, Austin Texas, Santa Fe New Mexico, and possibly parts of Alaska.

At the end of this we have extra funds to afford us up to 3 months with no work renting wherever we choose to stay for a bit.

Thanks again and looking forward to hearing some thoughts!

Have you put this on the USA branch?

You'll probably get more (and better) replies there......

Stay at the Clarion Hotel. I-35 near Oltorf. Cheaper than South Congress Ave Motels, by a long way. Excelent hotel. Great free breakfast choices.

haha - thanks - I've always enjoyed the Clarion's wherever I've been!
