Hi there! greetings to all! this is my first and certainly not my last post on the lonely planet.

I am planning a trip to anywhere but canada/usa in May 2012, and I am looking for the cheapest ways of getting to a place wether that be by charter, greyhound, row boat or ship. I have been delving the deeps of cheap travel as best I can with the semi limited knowledge I posses. Ive looked at skyscanner.com and other such websites.
I was thinking of flying from toronto because it was cheaper but from where I live (winnipeg) it would cost a lot to drive to toronto and by the end of it, I wouldnt be saving much money at all by the time I got to toronto.

So, fellow, compadres, do you have any tips? I want to get as far as I can as cheap as I can. My flight cost is no more then 1100 dollars.
Flying into cancun then busing to belize and guat seem like a common theme but is there anything comparable as far as price goes?
This is indeed my first trip outside of canada and I am backpacking alone.

Also, Ive googled cheapest places to get to from canada and I come up with nothing. Besides mexico, what is the cheapest flights out of canada to anywhere in the world?

have you searched any flights leaving from the US? in my experience its been worth it to drive from my home in new Brunswick to Bangor for a flight. it tends to the quite a bit cheaper. it may be worth it for you to check flights out of North Dakota or minnesota. as for destinations you should have no problem finding flights to central and even south america on your budget.

Your cheapest for sure will be Mexico......Winnipeg-Toronto-Cancun will be under 1000$CAD.

After that,you may be able to get Winnipeg-Bogota or Caracas (via the USA)for about your price limit.....

I'd have a look on a search engine like Opodo or similar...just put your dates in and try all combinations from your starting point!

I second the advice from vtrioreau. As a Canadian you should always check flights from the closest US city. Canada has the highets flight taxes in the world. In my case a flight from Detroit can cost as little as 25% of the same flight cost from Toronto.

But more importantly in my opinion is how you decide where you want to go. Price should never be the primary criteria in that decision. Your interests should be the first factor. There is little point in finding a cheap fare to somewhere that holds little of interest for you.

When searching for flights bear in mind that many LCCs (low cost carriers) do not pay any commission to agents and so you will not find them on booking sites like skyscanner, orbitz, etc.

i know when i booked tickets for my last trip to costa rica it would have cost me nearly 1000$ when i booked out of bangor it was a little under 600 (with insurance)

And to travelinstyle; Where and how do I find a low cost carrier?
Also, Price is definetly not holding me back from any such "dream vacations" because, to put it simply, I will have been to every continent and every country by the time I am old and grey... I lfind every country and every culture exciting and interesting. I want to be everywhere at once but alas, I only have enough money for one trip at a time.
Unless any of you would like to sponsor a backpacker? heh heh....worth a shot....
