Any country is doable on your own. But i'm not so sure India is doable on that budget. While you may totally luck out and get a 400 Euro fare, 600-700 is more likely. But even with 600 Euro to spend, you'd need to stick to one region of India as domestic flight would blow the budget and super-long distance trains would kill all your time.

Something a little closer, and smaller, like Morocco would give you much more money to spend in-country as opposed to flights. The freedom to do more activities and spoil yourself a bit is what holidays are for.

How about Bulgaria or Romania?

Cheap to get to compared to Africa/Asia,and pretty cheap to live in too....few tourists (except for a couple of beach places) but there are hostels and a more adventurous 'backpacker trail'.

Agree with above that it depends what you want to do too...these are good destinations if you like the outdoors, trekking, mountains and beaches.

You want to go away for more than 2 weeks? Hitch-hike, my dear fellow. As far as you can. Then, when time is running out, take a cheap flight home.
OR - hitch to the north of Spain and walk the Camino - 800 km - very good for body and spirit.
Or cross over to England and walk right round the country using the coastal paths and youth hostels. (Better not if it's to be soon, the weather's hellish right now.)
Or cycle to Greece, or Rome, or somewhere sunny.
There are heaps of things you can do without even setting foot in an airport....

Absolutely not to India or anywhere in SEA for starters. Too common don'tcha know. Who is that gonna impress.

I mean if you are really into having an 'adventure' then you gotta do a bit better than that. Adventure by definition requires two things. The unknown and risk. So I'd opt for somewhere like the Sudan or Ethiopia maybe. Any of the poorer war-torn African countries would fit the bill really.

So, do you really want an adventure or just a vacation? How big are your cojones?

Morocco might be the perfect place for you i'd say. Cheap to fly in (even Ryanair is flying there), lottsa stuff to see and do and cheap as well.
With a 1000 Euro you could easily travel a full month assuming you find a cheapish flight.

of course all depends on your interests and the time of year you plan to travel. you could look for cheap ryanair flights into Eastern Europe or as #14 says fly Ryanair to Morrocco. Have travelled cheaply to both areas and had a great time. India is a great country to travel in but may be out of your budget...mainly due to cost of flights

I second Romania as mentioned earlier. Bosnia & Hercegovina/Balkan could also be an option, not as much Croatia even though it´s a stunningly beautyful country, but Croatia are more expensive than the rest of the region.
Southern Poland with Krakow and the mountains.
If you want to get a bit further then Morocco is a good bet, but depends when your´re travelling. Morocco will feel like an oven in july.
Tell us a bit more about yourself or all you get is what a bunch of strangers like.
